Started yesterday 🙂 Using RJ Knits on YouTube.

May I present my first creation.

I can cast on, knit and cast off. Its a horrible tangle of holes, dropped stiches and other crimes.

Great fun and strangely relaxing.

Anyone else here knit or will confess  😉

Why would i have to confess?

Knitting and sewing is ace.

Never really got past making a scarf and once you have one scarf.... Well you don't really need another 🤣

@joshvegas

Scarf,  I dream of a scarf.

I'm hoping to make some Amigurami creatures. Of my own from scratch

This is a colab. All I did was stich up the head, installed the arms  and made the gun.

He is SCLI and my Dad of all people has claimed him..86. Also, of thd Somerset & Cornwall Light Infantry.

You could just make it longer.

And longer

And etc...

@redthunder mrsdb says that's fairly typical of what a beginner might produce, me I'm as likely to take up knitting as my wife is to take up fixing bicycles...

It's a real skill, no need to hide it.

My daughter, ever the nontrendy teenager, took up knitting and crochet about 4 years ago. She made little crochet/knitted toys for her friends as Christmas presents this year, and their reactions were fantastic. Knit & Natter aka Stitch & Bitch have helped make wider friend groups now she's at uni.

It can get to be an expensive hobby though, her wool habit is as bad as my bike bits habit.

Here she is modelling one of her latest creations

Never something I've thought of taking up - it's something that just seems to be beyond my understanding. I'd watch my mum knit and it's genuinely like watching someone conjuring - stuff just seems to be appearing. Can't get my head around the forming of 3d shapes either whereas my mum could make toys and the like intuitively without working to any sort of plan

My mum and all her sisters were all really prodigious and really fast knitters. I remember getting a lift from my aunty - she's married rather well so we were driving through Kensington in her XR3. We stopped at the lights and she picked up her knitting. When the lights changed she pulled away but didn't put the knitting down until she need to change gear.

It turned out the reason they all had this speed-knitting instinct was my gran was a terrible knitter. I've got pictures of my grandad in jumpers that can old be described as having been perpetrated rather than knitted. So whenever she indicated that one of the daughters might need a new jumper for school the girls would have to knit themselves one faster than she could.

We only have knitted decorations on our Christmas tree now find a new one to add each year

I'm fairly proficient at most needlecraft stuff, but I suck at traditional knitting. My mother tried to teach me multiple times growing up - she spins her own wool etc so tons of gear in the house to work with, but I could never get the hang of it.

Not the same thing but I've done a fair bit of French knitting over the years, I find it quite therapeutic once in the groove. Plus its very portable/low energy so can give you something to do when in camp on multi-day adventures

Mrs Sparkle is a very proficient knitter and crocheter. She spends a lot of time making stuff. I have never been tempted tbh but this thread has made me consider having a dabble.

@morecashthandash well done to your daughter that is a VERY impressive bit of work.

Thanks, we were gobsmacked when we saw it, by far the most intricate thing she's done. I seem to recall their granny getting her and her brother knitting when they were quite small, but she let it go for several years before taking it up again and getting serious.

She started out with scarves and it developed from there. Lead times are quite long for orders though. She claims to be studying for a degree.

Wow. Looks like I'm not alone.

My Nan was an expery knitter and mostly freestyle.

Back in the day, she knitted a Worms (game) figure. Still got it and I will take a photo later. Circa 95.

Also, it looks like a STW Tightly Knit Club could be in the offing 🙂

My wife is an excellent knitter - It must be fun to have a hobby you can do whilst working/watching TV and still being productive

She taught me a few years ago but as a beginner you really have to pay attention and thats where i got stuck!

We (my Sister & I ) used to spend most summers round at my Nan's house growing up while my Mum & Dad were working.
She used to get us knitting. We didn't really make anything specific and couldn't do the first stitch to get started.
But, we used to be able to make a fairly decent stab at long scarf shaped things.
We also used to make giant pompoms from left over bits of wool which I also enjoyed doing.

I should really give it a go, to give my hands something to do when chilling out in the evenings, rather than just scrolling through crap on Facebook. Could probably use it to keep myself entertained on long Z2 zwift rides 😁

At the age of 6 granny taught me to knit. I wasn't particularly good. But as a member of our local WI I have been enticed to take it up again. Mostly making squares for charity blankets. This November I knitted many poppies for our local Remembrance display at the Memorial park Cenotaph.

Very relaxing but I'll never be Tom Daly.

redthunder - good effort for your first attempt.

I seem to remember reading that knitting is quite a big thing in the military.(or the navy or something)

Must be an attraction to the sharp sticks    🤔

My mum and sister both knit. My mum used to knit for some designer brand in the 80s and I fell asleep to the sound of a knitting machine going late into the night. She has knitted a load of clothes for my boys. She is heavily involved in the Scottish machine knitter's and seems to spend her time buying, cleaning and selling knitting machines.

She has spent years wanting to knit me a jumper. finally I gave her a top to make and it's taken her months to get started.

Nobody picked up on the pun in the thread title? It had me in stitches!

I've never tried knitting ... I suspect I would get stabbed by myself. My sister on the other hand started out +20 years ago knitting and felting. She doesn't really do the knitting anymore but then progressively moved into dyeing yarn in all kinds of colourways. She sells online and at shows, even built an extension on the house for all the equipment and stock.

Felt Fusion hand dyed yarn.

However, since COVID she's found it pretty challenging and is winding down (sorry) a bit now.
