Hi
Started jogging in my lunch break. Nothing too hard, a few 1/2 runs/ jogs every other day.
Had to stop though as my knees started to feel sore and slightly painful a day or so later.
Any ideas as to why?
Would be nice to return to my runs.
Hi
If you're running on tarmac I would say that's why your knee hurts
yeah. been running along the thames ( hard path ) Have reasonably new shoes.
May have to try grass, or just do one a week maybe?
I'll be the first to ask...don't worry, someone has to. Did you have your shoes professionally fitted in a proper running shop. It helps to have your gait analysed and then have the appropriate shoes fitted, honestly, it helps a lot. Then if your knee is hurting a lot after doing that, I suggest maybe trying off road for a little less impact.
Yeah the right fitted trainer to your foot is very important
thats a good point. nope, i haven't had my shoes fitted.
thanks all. ๐
it's your body's way of telling you that you aren't an antelope...
Whereabout on the knees? Outside of the leg, kneecap or inside of the leg?
Definitely get your shoes fitted for your running style though, makes a hell of a difference.
At the bottom of the kneecap is common in new runners - patella tendonitis.
I had exactly the same problem as you Juiced. Basically I was trying to go out and run for about 30mins on a lunch time about 3 times a week and my knees started to give me problems.
Then I found out some good training advice for cyclists who might run for training.
Don't do more than 20mins walk/run, no more than 3 times a week to start with for the first couple of weeks and then increase running time by no more than 10% a week.
So it will take time before you can run for 45mins but the progressive build up gives your body time to adjust to your new exercise regime.
I can't seem to make a link work!!

Could be lots of names or causes but generally the pain is a result of your muscles, tendons and/or ligements adapt to the strains put on it. Often leads to a misaligned tracking of the kneecap hence pain.
R.I.C.E helps but if you cannot be bothered with R then do the others and a bit of self massage. Stretching helps as well as often it is because muscles have tightened somewhere in your leg, meaning a knock on effect is bad tracking of the knee cap causing pain. This could be anywhere between your hips to your shins.
Knee and ankle/foot injuries would be my specialist area on mastermind, however I have no medical training and am purely guessing. If in dought ask someone who has a clue (or a relevant qualification)
Try clenching your ass a bit and really engaging your core when you run. Seriously.
thanks everyone that's great. Pain was iirc at top of knee cap of both legs. felt quite acute in the centre.
Thanks JustRide for that link - will look at that later.
Cheers everyone.
