We will be in touch
Just received my phone and been reading up on how to transfer my contacts over and there's been a lot of comments about problem with the kies software.
Has anyone experienced this, or alternatively, is there a better/ easier way to transfer contacts over to my new microsim card?
Kies generally blows goats.
Not tried it on my Galaxy S3. Was alright on my Note and S2 though. Only reason for not trying on S3 is that I got it Saturday. Sunday it had stopped working properly. I can send and receive texts, I can use Skype without a problem. Try and make a phone call and the call connects but I can't hear anything at all and person I'm calling can't hear anything.
Combine that with bending a pedal spindle on Monday and my Ragley seatpost failing on my commuter bike this morning I aint a happy bunny!!
What's the best way to transfer then? Extra points for links. 🙂
Try Kies over Wifi. Or if you can upload them to your Googlemail account and Android downloads them again for you.
EDIT: You can also export the contacts to a memory card on most phones now and then put said card in your new phone 🙂
As above Kies really blows goats it's just about usable IMO, but at least it doesn't try to to take over your PC unlike Apple.
Kies is indeed a bit poor but does the trick. But I just export my contacts to the SD card and transfer (because I don't want all of my contacts on google).
Was your old phone an iphone?
Just upgraded to the S3, there is an option in itunes to sync your contacts to google and they then appear on the S3 (assuming you have a gmail/google account).

Yes, just have them all in an online service like a google account and then all you need to do is sign in.

No, HTC Desire.
Think I'll give the export to memory card option a go.
Kies is a terrible piece of software. The only point in its favour is that it's nominally better than the abhorrent PC Studio software it replaces.
The One True Way is as glenh says. Sync your old phone with a Google account. When I moved to Android, I went phone > Outlook > Google as there wasn't a direct route.
Once they're on Google, you've got a permanent backup, if you change phones to a different Android device it all comes across automagically.
No, HTC Desire.
Easy then. Assuming your Desire was syncing with Google (and it should or you're losing a lot of functionality), just sign in to the Galaxy with the same account and it should all just import.
Also, what are you doing with the old one?

Synch the phone with a Google account, it means you have an online backup if you you ever lose the phone. Google already knows everything about you, anyway.
If you want to avoid mixing contacts (for example work and home), just use separate gmail accounts. My "work" gmail account synchs contacts with Outlook on my work computer, but my home gmail (and hence contacts) don't.
I've used MyPhoneExplorer on my Wildfire and Desire, pretty good bit of software. I originally created my contacts as phone contacts which didn't sync to Google. I used MPE to export them, deleted all my contacts then imported them again as Google contacts. Now, they just magically re-appear when I get a new phone or install a new ROM or summink.
I use Kies, it's a bit pants TBH but does work (in it's own mad way) I also use the Kies Air (wifi) and despite the amount of time it takes to do stuff the software does indeed work.
Don't get too strung up about it, load it to your PC and do what we do, go make tea.
I've upgraded from GalaxyS to S3 and tonights the night I do what you lot have already done, load all my carp onto it.
Wish me luck, I'll be fine, I'm used to idiosyncratic software like Kies.
