You've done a survey of Japanese tourists and found that they'd stop coming here if we put the Royals up against the wall then?

LOL, made me chuckle

Nah, but I did live in Oxford for 5 years, 2nd worst place in the UK (after London) for tourists getting in everyones way and photographing everything.

and if they lived in awful housing conditions that passes for MOD homes and had to exist on a just a soldiers wage I'd have more respect for them rather than just playing at war because there's **** all else for them to do

Fair enough, I've not been in the armed forces so I can't comment. But I still think it's commendable that they are at least contributing.

She's wearing Diana's engagement ring, but she will never be the queen of my heart.

Much as it is great news for the happy couple, I really couldn't give a flying f***

They'll do it on a Saturday as well, so you can forget about the extra holiday

Wow really great we could not have had the anything better happen in the country - Oh I forgot all the people losing there jobs, families struggling to make ends meet etc etc.

Congrats to the couple - All I hope is that he does not do to her what his Dad had done to his mother. Poor Diana

Do you reckon her parents will start selling royal wedding mementos?

BUT... The British Royal Family earn the UK a lot more than they cost us

What do they cost per individual royal? Now are you OK about it?? Does it seem acceptable now?

No french royals but people still visit their old houses...

BUT... The British Royal Family earn the UK a lot more than they cost us

And if you'd been paying attention to the news lately you'd know that a system set up around three hundred years ago whereby all moneys from the Royal holdings go to the Treasury in return for a regular handout to the Queen for the running of the Royal households, which means the Queen gets around £2million or so in the Civil List, but the Treasury gets around £28million from the Royal Holdings. The Taxpayer gets a bloody good deal from the Royal Family and pays nothing for them. Now, the Queen no longer gets the Civil List payout, but keeps her own income. The British Taxpayer is now worse off by around £22million. Idlejohn, youre obviously too idle to check the actual situation.
Some of those figures may not be exact, but the principle is about right.
Not particularly fussed about the whole engagement thing, but I saw a classic 'stupid question' asked by a Five reporter earlier, talking about the engagement ring. William clearly stated it was his mothers ring, and the muppet asked 'what sort of ring is it?' Clot! It's one of the most famous engagement rings in recent history, clearly a chuffin' great sapphire surrounded by diamonds, and he asks what sort of ring it is. A F**in' engagement ring, you moron!

CountZero, that was meant as a joke but seems to have been lost on you?

However, a quick google search shows:

The Royal Family cost Britons £36.7m last year, equivalent to 61p per taxpayer, figures show.
Buckingham Palace said the figure, which excludes security costs, was at its lowest since 2001 and had fallen 2.3% in real terms since 2003-4.

From http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4119194.stm a report from 2005.

Not quite

The Taxpayer gets a bloody good deal from the Royal Family
, hmmm?

Obviously the BBC may be wrong and you right, but since you actually know in detail what type of ring 5 were asking about I'd guess you are a little more of a Royalist than most.

Just checked with my wife and she isn't aware of what type of ring it was either. Such ignorance! 🙄

It was lovely to see the two of them being interviewed. Very much in love and not enjoying any of the media attention. An attractive couple and intelligent.

Yes I am looking forward to the wedding, yes I am interested in the dress.

Let's just hope it takes all the media attention away from such boring types as Jordon, X factor winners and all these Z rated so called celebrities who clutter up the telly.

I can't be even slightly bothered in reading any of the other posts, however I watched the interview and think they both seem like nice "normal" people... As down to earth as they possibly could be! Plus, she's a bit of a pump! 😉

Yes, lets clutter up the telly with upper class twits who have never ever had to work or worry about anything by virtue of an accident of birth......

Jesus Christ, get down on those knees, you peasants, these people are far better than you ever will be.

I despair, I really do.

English people only have knees so they can get down on them in front of chinless wonders.

She must be thrilled to be wearing the symbol of a failed and loveless marriage.

And if you'd been paying attention to the news lately you'd know that a system set up around three hundred years ago whereby all moneys from the Royal holdings go to the Treasury in return for a regular handout to the Queen for the running of the Royal households

If that's true I wonder how the royal family managed to acquire those holdings? If all the income from them goes to the state how about giving us subjects our property back instead of just the income from it.

Thankfully nothing else important happened today so the news has been able to focus all their time on it 🙄

I give it 5 years before she's being chased through Paris by photographers on scooters......a situation like that can only end well

Whatever your opinion, be it a reasonable human being's or a daily mail bashing grumpy middle aged reprobate's, you have to say she's a bit of a bird.

Best of luck to them, I think it's pretty cool.

I'm really excited - I think it's great news........ I love a fairytale wedding.

On the day of the wedding I'm going to try to get to Buckingham Palace, in case they come out on the balcony and wave at everyone.

When she first came into the public eye I thought she looked a bit like a very good looking Charlotte Church, she looks even better now. Fair play Wills. Fair play.

On the money - a generation or two back the royal family was skint. A deal was struck that they no longer paid tax and since then they have amassed the fortune. However a lot of what is considered their wealth cannot actually be sold in reality.

Other European royals don't live as lavishly and there is no need for ours to do so either.

Yes, on the subject of looks, can't say I agree with you on the Charlotte Church thing (I think she's always been hotter), but well done him indeed! He is after all going nicely bald, and looks at least 20 years older than he is, she just gets hotter and hotter the older she gets!

How long before Charles does her?

I don't really care about this anymore. The royals lost their credibility years ago. Pompous, ancient, inbred and out of touch.

As for re-using mummies ring, I'd be a bit peeved if I was her. What next? A set of Mercedes keys and a personal driver.....

you have to remember that both his sons are active serving members of the British armed forces.
and if they lived in awful housing conditions that passes for MOD homes and had to exist on a just a soldiers wage I'd have more respect for them rather than just playing at war because there's **** all else for them to do

agreed, there's being at war as a soldier and there's 'having a little looksie' fair play to both him and his brother for going, but there's no way either of them will ever be in a position of significant danger.

His burd ain't bad looking, I'd smash her backdoor in, doesn't strike me as a goer though

up until last night i avoided this thread 'cos i cant stand the royals personally, but something i caught on the news before bed made me chuckle last night..... instead of her saying "i'm looking forward to spending the rest of my life with wil" she said "i'm looking forward to spending some more time with wil"! (or something along those lines.. it was lst night and i'm not looking online for an exact quote at this time of the morning)

and the bbc commentary said something along the lines of "a ring that symbolises his mothers death and a failed marriage"!

oh lordy how i chuckled, how i chuckled.

oh yeah, and david cameron standing outside number 10 grinning away like someone had just ticked his nutsack... (again, not an exact quote) "when we were told the news everyone around the table let out a Huzzah! and we had to stop torturing the poor with our hunting dogs to cheer with ample toryness"

other than that mentioned above which made me chuckle, i'm hoping all this will have as little effect on me as possible as i really dont give a ****

surely the question we should be asking is can it be better than dave & victoria's wedding or cheryl & ashley's or even the gypsy wedding on channel 4 a while ago

well pointed out, the other one was started for a chuckle, hoping it'd get a reaction and make some people spit out their porridge in disgust 🙂 but then again if the subject of the day was football (which again i know nothing/care very little about) i'd probably do the same.

I am sick of it already - I couldn't even have the tv on this morning as I was getting ready for work.

And on the local news last night their main news item was 'Kate's dad used to live in our region' and 'William recently spoke to a soldier from our region'.

Really? So u****ing what.
