The DVLA sent me a vehicle tax refund check a few days ago which was a surprise as I hadn't requested it.

Today I received notification that I am no longer the registered owner of the car which is a surprise as I haven't sold it.

I went online and it shows the car as correctly MOT'd but not taxed. The online ChatBot makes me full in my details and all about my enquiry before saying there is no-one available and closing the chat.

I tried the phone line and it told me that they were very busy and no-one was available and hung up.

Any ideas how I can find out what the ____ is going on?

Blast down your local heavily camera enforced route and see who gets the tickets?

More helpfully, police non emergency and report your car as probably cloned.

sounds like someone has told the dvla your car has changed registered keeper, probably using this service below (rather than the paper tear off form on the v5)

https://www.gov.uk/sold-bought-vehicle

To use the above you need the code on the front of the v5, so either someone mis typed theirs (and got your code instead )- but I'd expect the code to have some kind of checksum in it to minimise the likelihood of this scenario, or someone is trying to change the registered keeper of your car deliberately - has anyone else had sight of your V5 doc recently?

The DVLA aren’t immune to cock ups. The number plate for my work van was re-issued to another vehicle, I believe during a private plate change.
It led to similar issues and required a visit to the DVLA (locally) for an inspection to check my work van was the vehicle originally issued with said plate.
Basically they checked the vin number.

Can someone have completed a V62 and paid the admin fee? That would get them a V5C in their name and trigger VED refund to you as the previous registered keeper. You'd only need the vehicle reg to do this.

It's also possible your vehicle has been cloned and someone has registered the chaneg based on that?

I'd be very much pursuing this!

Similar thing happened to me a few weeks back, I just went on line and changed my address to the same address and a new form was sent to me.

There is no 'registered owner' of a car, just a 'registered keeper'. I'd be pursuing it with DVLA to get it corrected but I wouldn't be panicking. The car still legally belongs to you and as long as it remains taxed they aren't really interested who is paying it.

snip...but not taxed

Definitely needs to be sorted with DVLA, it'll be a pain to come back and find a DVLA wheelclamp on it in the street, or worse, a space without a car

IME their helplines are quickest on first opening at 8am

Until its not taxed, or is ticketed at 130mph on the m6, or is reported stolen by the new keeper and you find out at 7am on some idle Tuesday when you're pulled by the police, your car gets bumped and your insurance turns out to be invalid and lead to months of ballache as you're not the registered keeper anymore etc etc.

Doesn't this mean you've now got 2 additional 'owners' (keepers, maybe) on the V5?

The incompetence of DVLA truly has no bounds.
A different league to even Border Farce (hard to believe I know).

They took 10 months to issue a straight forward provisional licence to my daughter, finding error and fheckup after error and incompetence at each turn and obstacle they chose to dream up.

They also failed to continue the tax on a car I had too, after they had send confirmation it was set up (only realised months later when checking some bank statements and saw the monthly payments had not gone out for a few months. Lucky I'd not been stopped - though at least I did have the confirmation email and screen shots of it at the time of set up).

They need closing down and starting again from scratch. Probably overseas where they actually give a toss about doing the job right

Good luck with that, ask RBS what happens when you do that!

Yup dvla are not fit for purpose!! If incompetence was a sport they’d be on the podium every world champs 🙁

From reading threads on PH that have had similar situations:

Report to the police as a possible cloned car.
Put something on your car that can be easily identified (sticker on the screen or number plate works well).
Phone your insurers and explain the situation, get confirmation you are still covered.
I'd add do not drive it until you have proof of tax being applied to it.

Get on the phone to the DVLA first thing in the morning, without them knowing about it you are stuck and possibly liable for other issues if there is a duplicate car driving around.

Can someone have completed a V62 and paid the admin fee? That would get them a V5C in their name and trigger VED refund to you as the previous registered keeper. You’d only need the vehicle reg to do this.

They will send a letter to the previous registered keeper first before sending out the new V5C, happened to my dad when he sold his Yaris and me when I sold my Ka and the dealer cocked the paperwork up. But seeing as this is the DVLA that's what they're meant to do!

Yup, if applying for a new V5C the previous keeper is supposed to get a letter to confirm whether it's a legit request.

Got the new V5C a couple of days back and it is still showing the same number of former owners thankfully.
