Trying to figure out what I enjoy about the game. I think I prefer the mission aspect, I might enjoy powerplay. So for that I'd need a multipurpose ship I suppose. I could sell on my Crusader since that was a bit of an all-rounder too. Or, I could maybe fit that up for mining - haven't considered that.
I think I'd keep the AspX for exploration cos it's so cheap; a top all-rounder e.g. Python and a combat build - not sure what. On the other hand, I haven't done any passenger missions and I could afford a nice passenger ship.
If you want to mess around with a dedicated fighter then go for the Vulture.
It's great for learning combat without the cost or upkeep of something like an FDL
Who’s been to space jail then?
Yup. 🙁 Few times, I think - last one was returning a dodgy passenger to the station I picked them up from, which felt a bit unfair.
Mining's all right, but without the hotspot I wouldn't bother, and even then I only fill the Python if EDDB tells me the price is good - bit of a trek but 1.6m per ton at HIP 19934 ce soir, Fozard Station, I think?
Done a bit of trekking the last couple of days but I think I need to adopt a more chilled approach (and definitely and egineered FSD!), set off yesterday to get 20kLy out of the bubble - many hours, 4500ly and 220 grindy hops later, I've had enough, so this morning was working my way back. Scoopable stars pretty much every hop on the way out, much harder to find on the way back. Gonna try a different plan, actually LOOKING at what I'm flying through, instead of just grinding my way to The End.
First mission for the Feds today - it was a "buy and deliver grain" job on the board so put some racks in the Asp, but by the time I got back to the board to accept it, it had become a pirate assasination jobby, so I stuck a load of guns on the Asp's face and went and shot a man down.
Head over to Diaguandri – Ray Gateway for a 15% discount on all ships and modules at the station
I "live" there! 🙂 Has a decent range but not everything - Asp's got a 5B FSD for example, they don't have 5A there.
Spent last night making a few trips back from Mercy's Hammer jail station. Stupidly picked up an assassination mission of a politician who's surrounded by police ships...
He's in an ASP Explorer and I cant figure out what weapons to use to kill him with.
Some missions are worth abandoning.
@molgrips too right! I have no qualms about dropping out if I have overextended myself. I also drop out if the mission goes all Imperial on me and I need to start slaughtering space kittens or something.
Matt
hmmm I have thought about it. Doh.
Anyone done powerplay yet? I'm tempted - wonder if I can work against the Empire?
I want to get involved as well. I think I'm at the point where I can contribute something apart from dying, maybe not much, but something!
Matt
Man, I need a better combat ship. 🙁 Tried a Mamba, pleasingly fleet but sooooo slow to turn, went back to the Vulture and had two canopy incidents, one RTB with 17 seconds of air left, one with 10...
Bought a Krait MkII, resisted the temptation to sell the Challenger but I did swap the engineered FSD from it.
Went mining with only surface mining kit, predictably found a core and loads of sub surface deposits.
I am getting used to the Mamba now.
Getting good at power management swapping pips between engine and weapons.
Have a Vulture and absolutely hate it.
Next up is getting it engineered so time to farm some materials.
And I paid for my Krait and more last night as I was helping my daughter get to sleep on the sofa.
Tried mining with the Challenger, kitted it out with just mining lasers keeping some guns to fight pirates. Fought a pirate, she ran away. Found a load of sub surface deposits and a core that I couldn't touch. In the Krait I brought seismic charges with me, didn't find any cores.
I did not find it at all useful to have multiple prospector limpet capacity.
The glass jaw seems to be a thing with the Vulture and the Chieftain from what I've read. You can strengthen it with module reinforcements, but I'm not sure where the room's going to come from in a Vulture. I like mine, it doesn't fly as well as the Cobra but it packs a much bigger punch. Probably not the same as the huge hardpoint in the Mamba though!
Did my weekly mining trip, deep cores for Void Opals, got around 105t and about 25 alexandrite. A couple of jumps, about 40Ly in total, and I was about 110M Cr better off. Time for some missions I think now.
I like the look of the Krait II, I want one as a pirate ship and a Phantom for exploring.
Matt
I think the multiple prospectors is good for speed mining in the triple, but for cores it's useless. I have a big enough prospector to run two limpets, but that's because I have loads of room in my python and I'm running a dual mining set-up.
I'm not bothered about the fastest rate of credits and I actually prefer the mechanics of core mining. Having said that, I will go to the Borann hotspot at least once before it gets nerfed.
Matt
I was speed mining in the triple - didn't really help me. I fired off two, then tapped out one of the hits and lost the other one. By the time I found it I might as well have just fired a second.
I am not enjoying mining really. It's grind, I don't find it theraputic at all, unlike in No Mans Sky where all you have to do is shoot rocks - that was bizarrely pleasing to do for ages. I'm doing it to get some decent ships then I'll go back to missions and politics and a bit of pew pew thrown in.
I've got 90mCr, not sure what ship to get next. Save up for an Anaconda, a Type 10 to try and make money trading, or a Beluga for some passenger action. I'm not sure I fancy a pure combat ship.
I'm still grinding engineers. They piss me off a little as it is just grind after grind after grind to unlock everything. But its fun to unlock all the upgrades
I unlocked "Shield Guy" last night. His requirement (after unlocking the previous engineers obviously) was you had to have sold to 50 markets, I'd unlocked about 30 in the course of normal play so I spent a night in my Python doing single trade hops from system to system in the bubble to get up to 50.
I made a couple of million in the process but not really worth the time soak. Next he wanted 200 units of gold. I mined half of this and got some painite in the process. I bough the rest from a nearby station.
So I now have, Shields, FSD, Thruster, Power Plant, Power Dist and Multicannons fully unlocked for engineering.
Next grind is trying to find the rare material I need for the highest upgrades "Pharmaceutical Isolators" anyone?
Problem I find with the Mamba is actually bring weapons to bear - the best method I've found after the first pass is to fly backwards away from them, but it does make you a smidge vulnerable!
The way I fly the Mamba is this.
Make sure I start of from distance, the he'd straight for them, changing all pips to weapons, slow down as I get in range and just track them with guns for as long as possible, then all pips to engine to boost away then boost turn untill they are in sights again, then repeat from the slowing down bit above.
Tidy, I'll give that a try, thanks. 🙂 What was bugging me yesterday was submitting to inderdiction knowing it'd be a target, then getting minxed as I turned like a battleship to get my first shots off. As I'm already facing away, I'll give it full loud so I can be facing them before getting in range. Cheers! 🙂
Have you tried turning flight assist off, flipping the ship and then turning it back on again.
Most of the combat vids I've seen lately, they appear to be using this to turn faster or so it appears.
I enjoy mining, but that might be because I only do core (despite having a dual ship) and I only do it to get enough money for a new ship and the rebuy.
I haven't had to grind yet, I just do the stuff as I'm wandering about, I scan, land, chase signals, pick up salvage from ships I kill, to me it's part of the game and I'm not in a rush.
Grade 5 manufactured are usually high population systems, boom state seems good for some, fed for the ship materials, empire for imperial shielding(i think). Don't know about the isolators, try a loop of high pop systems and see whether any appear, then refine for that state on your map. Robert's your mother's brother. That's how I am going to approach it. TBH I haven't travelled in the bubble that much.
Matt
Save up for an Anaconda, a Type 10 to try and make money trading, or a Beluga for some passenger action. I’m not sure I fancy a pure combat ship.
Save up for the Conda, it can do pretty much anything in the game. The other two are way too specialised and other ships can do the same jobs cheaper anyway.

I have, yeah, but it doesn't seem to make much difference in the Mamba - Vulture definitely turns a bit sharper, but the Mamba turns like a canoe a hundred foot long. 🙁
It's because you picked the worst dedicated combat ship in the game!
Yeah it looks cool as, but its basically an FDL with shite maneuverability and worse shields and armour.
Sell it, buy an FDL* and move on 😉
*I still prefer my Cheiftain though
one RTB with 17 seconds of air left, one with 10…
You know you can synthesise life support refills don't you...
I haven’t had to grind yet, I just do the stuff as I’m wandering about, I scan, land, chase signals
You mean in exploration?
I think the Anaconda is probably the good choice for trading. I'd like to see if I can do better than basic buy low sell high, which seems capped at around 2000/tonne profit at most. With 470t capacity (if it were practical to outfit it) that would make nearly a mil per trip. Which would be ok but a little dull after a while. I might have to start reading GalNet to see where the trade action is.

Chieftains are hard to kill! Maybe I'll work towards one of them - I got a bit dazzled by that high speed and huge hardpoint... 🙂

I didn't! But I'll look it up, ta. 🙂
The point of the Mamba is the look.
I will put some Roxette on loud next time I fight in mine 🙂
I have tried the Culture and I just can't get that ship to play ball, but after some practice I take down most things fairly fast in the Mamba and when you get in trouble it's easy to boost away.

Polymers.
4000+ credit per ton easily.
Single hop trade routes.
Thank me later
@Molgrips not just exploration, everywhere, if I haven't got anywhere to be or the mission complete time is a day or something ludicrous. Basically every opportunity.
Fly out of the station, scan the traffic, wake scan when they jump.
Jump in system, scan the beacon, shoot anything wanted (this bit often gets me in trouble!), collect dropped materials, scan traffic, scan wakes, back into supercruise, ID degraded, encoded or high grade emissions (HGE), find them, then head to your destination.
I don't do all of it every time, but it's amazing how it adds up.
My first exploration was from my home planet, so I have a list of planets with geological signals and which rarer ones were included. #spreadsheet****er Same for HGE.
Matt
I LIKE the Fer De Lance! 🙂
Just had my canopy shot out in the Vulture again! Having a great scrap with a deadly Asp Scout. I thought I'd synthesised some more but with 2 seconds to go clearly not. Ah well, back to the rebuy.
Matt
Went on another mining trip, filled the hold with LTDs and jetted off to the place I got 1.2m/t last time, but this time only 650k! Still, got enough for an Anaconda but not enough to insure it. I think I will do something else now though - a few missions, maybe build some rep and get some passenger miles done. Mining is boring.

Thing is I don't want to be told what to buy, I want to learn how to find out what to buy.
after weeks or playing with no problems last couple of days game have suddenly become really stuttering and not smooth at all.
Anyone else have had this problem and any idea how to fix it?
No lag issues ce soir, and that's with Mrs Pondo streaming shit TV too.
Good point, the internet have been a bit funny lately I was worried it was my graphics card dying slowly but could be lag spikes on the connection.
Just installed EDcompanion on my phone bow I can find my ships without docking at a station with a shipyard lol
On the one hand...
Mining is boring.
On the other...
Thing is I don’t want to be told what to buy, I want to learn how to find out what to buy.
... a bit of Google equals 1 million+ per ton. Does that make up for yhe boredom? Does for me.
Did a Matt today - pottered around, got the sol permit. Got the tea and classic collection trophies as well.
Took photos of a slightly flooded UK.
Went looking for the planet that gave me the Kepler's eye trophy - screen shot on PS4 suggested something, but getting there said it was discovered and mapped by other people
Earned a shed load of ark coins in the process.
It was great.

This is the point for me. If you want nice things you need to pay for them with a bit of boredom.
Matt
I've already given up and used Google to make credits. But I'd like to learn how to trade well just for the sake of playing the game. If I want credits I can go back to Borann.
I LIKE the Fer De Lance! 🙂
The only thing i'm not keen on is the off centre cockpit, the frame lining on the right hand side just throws me off when flying, aiming and coming out of stations.
Tweaked my Python's mining build last night, swapped one collector for more storage, upgraded the other collector to 5A - only three colkector limpets, but now they live a bit longer and have better range. It's a bit slower but feels much less frantic - I'm not sitting waiting for a limpet to die to fire another one into action for maximum efficiency, and I must have binned 20 or 30 to free up cargo space. 🙂
You're never going to get rich, but biowaste can have a great margin if you find the right system combination. The only problem is that you are making a 400% margin on 80cr/t
When I'm in the Cobra I like to try and work out what will make a profit in the next system based on economy, government and state. I reckon I'm successful about 40% of the time. Sometimes it's a good job I only have 32t!
