For the princeley sum of £19.
Saw some pedals on FB (MTB Trade & Sales North East England) & messaged the seller about postage which he reckoned would be £4.00. I asked about Paypal but he doesn't have it & could only do a bank transfer. I ummed & aahhed a bit to myself & thought, 'It's only £19, I've done it before & not been robbed' & paid him. 10 days or so later, no pedals, so I messaged him & asked If he'd posted them yet, got a quick reply thus...
'Honestly mate I haven't and I don't mean to sound like a (see ya next Tuesday). I basicly crashed my bike too the canell, broke my shoulder and two phones, then when I got a new phone I couldn't find your damage message to get the address. I've been waiting for a message for days so I could find you man. Some days I can get 30 or 40 messages and people are hard to find. I am really sorry about that mate. I can't even get to the post ofice again till tomorrow but I can send them to you then or I can issue you with a refund.'
Told him I'd rather just have the goods than faff about looking for more pedals & just to post them. Then he says...
'It's all good mate. That was ment to say I crashed into the canell. Did up my left shoulder, my right hip. Been a rough week mate then to top it of my cannondale system six carbon got stole too. Pissed right off.
Clayton
(Damaged my) not did up. This phones craps too'
In the meantime he's put some different pedals up for sale.
Next one is...
'I'm dyslexic. Well I'll do that in the morning and take a pic of the parcel and stamps
In the post office. Sound mate.'
Then he sent a voice clip explaining how he'd ended up in the 'canell'. It was because he had toothache & drank some whisky to dull the pain because he doesn't like taking painkillers, but he hadn't taken his usual meds because he'd had some whisky, blah blah blah.
That was last Sunday. During the week he's put some other stuff up including some Pace RC36 forks, but he's gone silent on me.
Anyhow, anyone got some decent DX pedals with good bearings for sale?
Paypal only. 😉
Maybe keep him talking/typing to get your £19 worth. You'd have rip off a lot of people at £19 each to make a worthwhile amount of money surely? If I had to reply to 100 messages for each £19 I'd probably think twice. Can you sign his number up to loads of dodgy websites etc?
You’d have rip off a lot of people at £19 each to make a worthwhile amount of money surely?
Well that's what I thought. I mean £19K or even £1900 & it becomes viable! £19 seems a low rip off amount.
I'll wait a couple of days & message again & see if he puts anything else on.
Go and throw him in the canell.
Ask yourself this; does this guy really sound like the kind of person who is living a life of luxury, ripping people off for £19 a go? Not really. Much more likely to be someone with possibly quite complex issues, who may struggle in life and just ****s things up. Perhaps a bit of perspective is helpful; is your situation possibly better than his? If so, then is it really worth losing sleep over £19? I've had crap food in restaurants that's cost a lot more than that. Of course, it could just be that he's a ****, but it seems like an awful lot of trouble to go to just for £19. Personally, the best outcome for me would be to write off the £19, try and imagine that it's doing him some good, possibly, and just move on. Life's too short.
I was going to say something simmilar, there's not much comeback on a bank transfer, especialy for £19 so if he was out to scam you, why would he waste his time replying and spinning a yarn?
I guess we'll never know, and it is only £19.. He sounds a bit 'simple' but he could also be a real pro either way..I think I'd chalk this up to experience and not make bank transfers to unknowns.

No but he does sound like the sort of petty criminal who rips people off for whatever he can get to afford his next hit of whatever he's addicted to. OPs 19 quid is gone but Id expect the forks to go for a bit more, and sounds like a string of other stuff (allegedly) for sale, so he had the time to do that but not to get to the post office or reply to the OP again.
Frozen sausages etc. Although I just thought the OP was telling the tale rather than planning a vigilante campaign of shitting down a chimney.
serves you right for being a tight fisted old ****.
get some new one bought ebenezer............... :o)
Inciteful. Concise.
ton for Prime Minister. 😃
Maybe keep him talking/typing to get your £19 worth.
OPs post worth about £19 in terms of time and materials.
You seem to be outing a guy who has problems, nice.
He might have problems, which would be a shame, but I don't think that gives him the right to someone else's money. If he can't cope with all the messages he gets and therefore has to keep peoples money without sending them the goods they've paid for, then he should probably stop trying to "sell" things.
I got the impression the OP was sharing an anecdotal story rather than outing him and unleashing the full wrath of the internet.
Hopefully he really is just a bit crap and the pedals arrive, then the lynch mob can go home and the bleeding hearts can stop hyper ventilating.
It was because he had toothache
Was it a root canell?
I like this story. Please keep us updated.
I've got some pedals, PayPal gift ??

True but it’s not nice to make fun of his dyslexia.
Nothing to add except my total sympathy for the OP and I think he's perfectly reasonable to share it with his virtual mates as therapy.
It's the just the £20. I've been lucky with trusting people online and it gives me a happy warm feeling about my fellow man.
On encounter with a scrote like this and It tarnishes all our trust in each other.
serves you right for being a tight fisted old ****.
get some new one bought ebenezer…………… :o)
I should've asked you 1st pal!
True but it’s not nice to make fun of his dyslexia.
There's only 2 mentions of dyslexia up to now. One on the quote by the seller & one by you.
You seem to be outing a guy who has problems, nice.
Wrong. I'm saying what happened, is that ok?
Hey OP I’m with you. Someone has their back up (can’t be arsed re-reading the thread) but grifters and scammers for which appear to have found an fine example, can F-R-O.
Wrong. I’m saying what happened, is that ok?
Not only did you name them, you felt the need to use their spelling of canal.
His biggest problem is probably trying to keep track of the 30 or 40 bullshit stories he's told people that he hoped would earn him £570 or £760!
You seem to be outing a guy who has problems, nice.
Only problem is living up to his end of the bargain. Excuse after excuse. Honestly, wait about a fortnight6, personally I dont see you doing that either without at least personal concerns.
Update, he's just put this on for sale, still ignoring my messages though!
@drac for a prroppa Northumbrrian, I can't believe ypur'e so soft in the head.
Ex inmate screwing over an ex screw? 😉
Love how you relate an amusing little story including copy/paste of text. You’ve lost £20 and somehow you’re the villain. I love this place

Only telling exactly how it is.
I know. Laughable isn't it?
Man gets scammed for his hard earned money and explains his story to his online friends with no malice etc ,but still gets told its his fault for outing a person with problems 😕, only problem I can see is theft. Not really even justifiable Drac only you mentioned the dyslexia, not that it matters

Who's Drac?
Do we get points for needless hand wringing? Free stiff from the store or something? That’s the only reasonable explanation I can think of for defending the scammer. Something, something next time child’s face
Sorry have I missed something (apologies if so) but Drac is the person above posting saying that it's your fault for outing someone with dyslexia even though you didn't, when really you've been robbed of your money
OP did you use the report user function in FB marketplace? You can flag users for stuff like this. Not fool proof but if a few people do it may prevent him listing more stuff.
This thread has to be peak STW handwringing. I think you must get points or something if you're the first to spot a microaggression in an otherwise reasonable thread. Plus points too for using a gender neutral pronoun when pointing out the microagression.
Absolutely no where have said it’s Essel’s fault. But, he’s come on here named the person and then quote’s their spelling mistakes.

Classy.
Come on Drac, EGF quoted their message and presenting the course of events - that’s all.
Where did he name him? How do we know he’s actually dyslexic, because the guy says he is? We’re taking him at his word even though he’s clearly a thief? Just seems like he’s badly educated and utterly shit at spelling which is an entirely different thing to dyslexia.
In the original post and then placed a Facebook link too.
Just seems like he’s badly educated and utterly shit at spelling which is an entirely different thing to dyslexia.
Oh dear! That’s what I was told too. Turns out my parents and I were right.
I understand dyslexia Drac and this just doesn’t seem like it. Happy you were diagnosed. Mention it much to random strangers on Facebook when scamming them? Why are you defending the guy? He deserves outing so other people don’t fall for his shit.
Looks very like dyslexia to me.
Why are you defending the guy? He deserves outing so other people don’t fall for his shit.
I haven’t. We have one version of a story, we’ve been here before where people post details of the other party. It has turned into a witch hunt against them with members from here attacking them. I’ve already deleted one post of someone suggesting that a few do just that.
I may have got Essel’s post wrong, I didn’t see the need to reuse the spelling of canals but yes the sale is dodgy.
He didn’t reuse he copy/pasted the guys text. You expect him to edit it before doing so? Normally agree with 99% of your posts but think you’re way wrong on this one. I’ll leave it there as don’t want this to devolve in to an argument.
He didn’t reuse he copy/pasted the guys text.
Well he did
Then he sent a voice clip explaining how he’d ended up in the ‘canell’.
He may have meant no harm but it was just unnecessary.
I was hearing last night of a friend's daughter who's sold her house. Fraudsters somehow got between her and the solicitors and as a result the money was paid into the wrong account and is now gone.
How dare, you, you unfeeling brute, those scammers might have verucas!
He must have hit that canal at some speed to break a shoulder and damage a hip. Wrecked two phones too.
Odd, I thought only drug dealers carried multiple phones 😕
Just as well he has a champion on here 🙂
*Update*
Still no goods, however he’s since listed a Cannondale singlespeeder & a piece of Chinese porcelain. I asked If I could have that instead of the pedals but no reply, so I even asked if he’d just let me know if he’d robbed me so I could look for some more pedals as I don’t want to buy some more then have his turn up, no reply. So I tried asking (politely) for a response of some sort but it appears he’s blocked my messages.
Ahh well, back to work tomorrow for £9 an hour.
You monster Essel! He’s just a poor dyslexic fella and this is clearly all your fault or something
never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity
To try to clear the garage during our latest lockdown, I've been listing various bits and pieces as free to collector on Gumtree and Marketplace. If ever there was an illustration that some people are just bumbling along, unable to even manage an incredibly simple task/interaction, then this has been it.
I used to work with a bloke a bit like that, he was great fun and everyone loved him, but his life just seemed a continuous stream of gaffes and ****-ups that would leave you with your head in your hands. He once melted the dashboard of his new company car by buying a knockoff airfreshener from the market and clipping it (horizontally) to the airvent on top of the dash. The vial of perfume leaked, and then the hot sun through the windscreen caused it to react with the rubber of the dash, melting a 20cm wide hole in it and completely buggering the instrument cluster underneath.
You look at that one thing in isolation - and that's just bad luck right? Could have happened to anyone. But that kind of thing happened to him all the time. Some people do genuinely manage to lose their phone every couple of months, but knowing this, somehow can't organize themselves to back the thing up, or have a spare.
I've just come to accept that some people do really live their lives like this: just lurching from one calamity to another - fall in a canal one day, bike stolen the next, then pass out for a day after trying to treat tooth ache with bottle of whiskey instead of neurofen.
You now have his bank account details.
Set up multiple standing orders for tiny amounts of money. 12p here, 7p there.
At least you'll feel like you're looking after him.
