south Lanarkshire here and as with the Ayrshire folks earlier, there has been a marked reduction in fireworks so far this year. I like them on Bonfire Night and when our kids were younger we would always go to a local display. Last few years its been a gathering with some of our friends and kids for dinner/drinks/fireworks, and always a good fun evening.

This year is our first with a dog in the house, he's a year old and seems pretty jumpy with them, so tonight it will be common sense, short walk, on lead, ideally before too much commotion, and then an evening at home, blinds shut and tv on (pretty much a regular evening!). I don't really see it as a big deal, and can't really fathom the dog owners who are getting so uptight about it. I may have a different view on that this time tomorrow I guess .. 🙂

Diwali celebrations maybe?

Well according to a claim once made to me Croydon has the second largest Gujarati community in the UK, so more than likely.

Restricting the use of fireworks to bonfire night, Diwali, and January 1st, sounds sensible to me. Allowing selfish arseholes to do it any night they fancy doesn't.

a lot of people are uncomfortable around dogs and would rather they were on a lead in public

It’s ok , they are friendly 😃

Fireworks restrictions

I figure it's about time someone pointed out that there are already legal restrictions on when you can buy fireworks, set them off etc.

Whilst it might seem like a free for all that's not because you're allowed to do as you like, it's because there's sod all way of policing it and changing the law wouldn't change that.

Our dog is crazy scared of any loud bangs...car/motorbike exhausts etc so the whole firework thing is a pain really. It's not the organised public displays as these are very few and far between its the random ones set off by kids pissing about every night for the whole time they are on sale. For this reason she gets walked during the day throughout Nov to avoid the panic. It is something that we just deal with but it would be great if fireworks were only the domain of organised public events imo

This year should be quite concentrated - Diwali last night, 5th tonight, then maybe some Saturday.

Diwali can be a couple of weeks ahead or behind, and when it's a midweek 5th we get garden firework parties both weekends.

Try and make it any of the towns on the Spanish Valencian coast when they’re holding a “mascletada”, it’s an amazing experience.

Reykjavik on New years eve is another one thats awesome for fireworks. To quote Baldrick - Boom, Boom, Boom!

Always thought that it would just be best to stop sale to public and just allow big organised events at a weekend, so it's just one day of the year, lot cheaper to take kids to an organised event that last for a few hours, then to buy £100 of your own fireworks and it still only last about 5 minutes, followed by comments of "was that it dad!?"

As with the other Scots - I've never found it particularly bad compared to what I see/hear reported "down south" and this year has been particularly quiet. In fact I don't think I've heard any in the last week.

As a very rough guess I’d imagine that's more to do with the historic origins of guy fawkes night being a little less popular in Scotland than England so the bonfire thing wasn’t as well established when sales of fireworks on November became a thing.

I'm not convinced by that.

(and obviously your NEDs spend on bucky not bangers)

that may be a factor. It also seems to me that very few teenagers are getting their hands on them compared to when I was that age. Is it just they have greater choice on how to burn £20 or have we got meaningful tighter controls?

Equally I’d imagine the volume sold at new year is probably the other way around.

Very much a guess mind.

Interesting - I don't think there's a huge amount here at New year. Yes there will be some and I guess they are all set off pretty much at midnight but probably will be more back garden fireworks tonight than 31/12.

Did you read your link? It shows that it is perfectly legal to set off fireworks up until 11pm any day of the year even if it isn't a special occasion.

Last November the local park was littered with spent fireworks for days. People cannot be trusted to have fun and clear up after themselves.

See also crisp bags, soft drinks cans, chip wrappers etc etc. Ban?

That's easy to solve, make over the counter fireworks really volatile/dangerous. It'll be easier to spot the nobbers due to the missing fingers/one side of their face looks like it's been ironed.

Apparently the supermarkets locally never got them in til last weekend, and the counter is only manned from 10-5, office arsonist has just confirmed (he's from Paisley, so can be excused).

Ha, you should all live in Ottery.
It's like a town full of pyromaniacs....fireworks going off all week, homemade mortars (rock cannons), a 10+ meter high bonfire, people running round with flaming wooden barrels on their backs, and a crowd of 10,000+ drinking heavily and baying for more.

I'm staying in with the cats tonight and drinking red wine 😉

I know of 8 others in Dunblane from Gujarat, plus myself. I reckon proportionally that must be quite high....

can’t really fathom the dog owners who are getting so uptight about it

My first chewed his way through the kitchen door in a terrified state just to get further into the house and away from the fireworks. He was a quivering mess at the slightest hint of them.

My last spaniel didnt even bat an eyelid at them despite living in Shawlands which was like the gulf war in October and November.

6 month old Lab now and he hasn't heard a single firework yet. The joys of living in Thorntonhall 😆

I have a local trail centre that always has energy gel wrappers and suchlike dumped. Ban is the only solution I can see.

As said, if it was a single night folk can deal with that, when it’s entirely at random not so much.

This. I wouldn't complain about a week here and there. But any excuse from Rangers winning something (OK a rare one) to the 6 weeks before Guy Fawkes and a month around new year. And any time from lunch time onwards.

That said it has been very quiet round here this year. Maybe the 2021 act has having some effect.

Does this mean we can dismiss anyone who lives within a 20 mile radius of an airport that complains of aircraft noise?

yep

What about those who complain about TV programmes when there is a choice of 100 different channels to watch and it’s no longer 1960 with only 1 or 2 channels to choose from?

yep

What about cyclists who complain about cars?

nope

What about drivers who complain about cyclists?

yep.

Jersey has the right idea - you need to be licenced to purchase and organise a display.
Only officially organised displays are allowed and usually only over one or two nights.

Round by us it usually sounds like Baghdad for a week either side of the 5th - unusually quiet this year...... apart from the idiot setting them off a 23:45 the other night.

Our dog is slightly annoyed by them in so much he'll just cuddle up to the closest available human until they stop.

My Mrs has more of an issue with them as she has a shunt fitted because she had hydrocephalus and the shunt is positioned close enough to her ear that it amplified the sounds....

My dog used to shake uncontrollably and vomit everywhere, which was tremendous fun. Only going deaf stopped it happening any more.
So the ridiculous anyway 'bonfire night' really used to piss me off. One night a year is tolerable I suppose with hindsight but any other night and I'm all for getting the army out on the streets with a shoot on sight policy for any w@nker setting them off.
The ones usually setting off fireworks on any other nights are the dregs of society so wouldn't be a great loss anyway. Usually its those louts who stand around with their hands down the front of their trackies trying to look all menacing and tough. "Look at me, I'm fondling my genitals in public while standing around with my mates, i must be well ard"

End of rant.

Not really a fan of fireworks. Equally don’t like barking dogs and stepping in poo. Should we maybe ban both? 😉

We seem to have global warming and are setting off a lot of crap pyrotechnics to celebrate anti Catholic sentiments.
Frightens animals both domestic and wild. What's to like.

So what the cats and dogs exist there is no pressing need to set off lots of bangs. The two are separate issues.
Where my partner works they have tenants afraid of what the local knuckle daggers are doing build fires and setting off fire works.
Time for a complete ban.

Went for a pint after work. On the way back I'm walking through an office park and I can see a bunch of frankly pisspoor fireworks being let off next to an office on some grass. As I get closer, its a family having their own display. Everything fizzles out and they get in their car and drive off leaving their discarded fireworks on the grass.

Pricks.

Living on the edge of Leeds I've had a holiday in Scotland every year since getting a dog to get away from them. This week in Dornoch there's been none until tonight and the the dogs are knackered from all their exercise this week, plus the fact they can't really hear them over the telly, that it's not a problem. The random ones for weeks on end at home are far harder to deal with.

Down south most seem to have forgotten the point of the night but here they had had a procession with burning torches to the bonfire. There's no Catholic churches nearby anyway.

Round here it’s rich scroaty pr****. Money, entitlement or house standards are not a measure of empathy for fellow humans (or animals).. see Boris Johnson and others.

Just back in from dog walk. Last night on snoozed through the silliness the other was on diazepam. Three rockets in the garden and one on the car roof. Guess I'll tidy up then. Only plus point is it's their money that's fizzled to a disappointment pop.

Drove through some of the most deprived parts of East Manchester last night, a lot of universal credit / drug money going bang. There was one big bonfire, no sure if it was a bonfire or just a car on fire.
