I fancy a trip to the seaside with the family this weekend. Our normal destination is Druridge or Embleton bay in Northumberland, but looking at the map my eye was drawn to the Solway Firth.
What are the beaches like there? Any recommendations? Also, can anyone recommend a pub for lunch, or is a picnic a safer option?
Did a week round Kippford / Rockcliffe the other year when our lad was 2/3 and it was Susan-perb. Dalbeattie 5 mins away as well 😉
Brilliant pub in Kippford too...
Cheers.
I know the Dumfries side is nice, I was wondering about the Cumbria side.
Fabulous. You'll not be disappointed.
Beaches at Allonby & Silloth are good.particularly at low tide.
V flat . You can get an ice cream ,coffee & cake etc.
Can be be windy .
Good cycle path from Maryport now I hear.
Go and have a look - a trip to any coastal location is worth a weekend. I suspect the Scottish side has more to offer though. What about the South Lakes coast around Silverdale/Arnside?
Not much beach at Silverdale and Arnside as it's all Morecambe Bay mud. Nice countryside and pretty villages though and you are very close to the Lakes.
I know the south lakes well, my grandparents lived in Grange over Sands.
North Cumbria side is easier for me to get to, and fits in with a trip to extended family in Caldbeck
Thanks, I reckon Silloth might be worth a look.
I've not really visited the English side of the Solway (or not that I can remember anyway, although I know I've been to Silloth as a kid) but we did a few days on the Scottish side and enjoyed it.
