[Closed] Is it too late to cut the grass?

I kind of missed what I was intending to be the last cut in October as everything was/has been too wet.

We've now had some less wet weather, and I could cut it, but is it too late/cold now?

For clarity, this garden will never win awards, but be interested to know whether it would be helpful to give it a last trim this late in the year, or is it better to just leave it, now...

I was in a similar boat last weekend.. I cut it - doesn't seem to have killed it and it looks better than it was.

As long as it's reasonably dry or grounds staff cut all year round.

You can cut any time it's not frosty - think about golf courses, football and rugby pitches, etc.

If its growing, cut it.

Maybe dont cut it if there is going to be a hard frost the night after

I cut mine in Nov, it's already grown back to where it was. It's so long that it'll get flattened and matted if someone walks on it or if we get snow. That really screwed it up one year.

Do it. It's also useful for scooping up any leaves plus I throw down some iron sulphate which seems to do some good. Rake and aereate if you get bored.

Absolutely rumbled! I was hoping for at least one or two reasons why you absolutely can't cut it after October!

Ah well, here goes...

Normally it would be too cold but it's been so mild so far this year I don't see a reason not to. We've still got flowers budding that would normally be long dormant...

Same in N.I, we have a rose with a flower on it, the rose cuttings are still growing. Very mild!

I cut mine in December a couple of years ago, it was still growing. Didn't seem to do it any harm, but it's more of an area of grass than a lawn.

I have sometimes still been doing the odd lawn in Dec normally done around now as the frost/cold is a factor but it is milder than last year, just don't cut too low.

Been lightly cutting but mainly to get leaves up from round the orchard.

I cut mine this weekend, it was getting long and I couldn't be bothered to rake up the leaves so cutting it solved both problems.

I usually let mine grow a bit longer over the winter, my reasoning being it hopefully dries the soil out a little. And a couple of light doses of iron sulphate to keep the moss from taking over (I've tried aerating it but short of digging it up and starting again we're stuck with the clay soil we've got, no amount of compost and sand will help!).

Just let it grow! enjoy the pretty wild flowers, increased biodiversity, more pollination and food for the bee's

After cutting grass nonstop between March and mid October I’m not touching the mowers at work until next year. Yeah the lawns are looking shaggy at the moment but I’m too busy with leaves to care

You'll probably do more damage to the soil if it's wet by compacting it. If you've got light soil then go ahead, if heavy clay you can sometimes end up with noticeable wheelings in the summer. No bother either way with a Flymo though.

If it's dry enough, then you can cut it.

If it's damp, and ours doesn't really dry out until April now, it helps if the blades are sharp.

If you still need a decent excuse, brown bins collections are cancelled in lockdown where we are.

Just got in from cutting mine, mainly to pick up leaves. It's a bit wet but not too bad. Blade was sharpened during Lockdown I lawn mower re-body.

Wow! this is exciting! I cut mine yesterday! The battery mower copes with the wet grass pretty well, but if yours is anything like mine, I would recommend frequent scraping out of the grass round the blade. It got very bunged up. I look forward to not doing it again until ..ooh, April?!

tis a good point, i got fed up and just bunged mine back in the shed - not good as the acid will continue to eat through the deck...

I was raking up leaves yesterday and breaking up the wormcasts and noticed the grass was long in places, so got the mower out (without grass box) and whizzed round on a high cut. It tided it all up....if nothing else. That'll be it now, until Spring. :-/
