Or should I go for a 10.1" Android tablet? Just wondering if folk find they take them "out and about" in which case the portability of the smaller one would be an advantage

Subjective.
My experience was that a 7" wasn't significantly smaller/more convenient over a 10" to make the smaller one worthwhile.
Bigger is better, just like my ***** - ask my girlfriend.
My iPad fits in my handlebar bag, that's the only size consideration I worried about.
Are you planning to wave it around at the locals in Nigg? In which case you want to pack the biggest one possible.
If you have a smartphone I would definately go 10.
What do you mean by out and about?
mtb - 8inch - ipad is not comfortable for me in the pack but it does fit
walking - 10 inch as its no compromise
