I am struggling to see the plan here?

Surely they are already stopping any tankers leaving there? A tanker isnt exactly something you can sneak past an entire US carrier group.

Which leads onto if they do capture it then what? The Iranians either turn off the taps or just lob highly explosive things at the ship which needs to spend several hours loading highly explosive cargo.

Whilst I guess it would remove one place the Iranians wouldnt being able to attack shipping from it does give a lot more weaknesses.

I am pretty much convinced now about the theory that US/Israeli intelligence were certain most of the Iranian leadership would be in a particular spot at a particular time.

A decapitation, aka collect underpants, strike was proposed and agreed to.

Hegseth is presently giving a press conference. He truly is beyond parody. He's like a cartoon character

As well as the usual crass glorification of violence, weird crusader christian shit, premature triumphalism and Trump brown-nosing, he's now added in accusing the US press of being unpatriotic for having the temerity to question whether this was a good idea.

He's finished off with more evangelical 'mission from god' bollocks, obviously

He is toxic vetbro culture personified. But unlike the rest of his ilk, he's been give the keys to the most powerful military in the face of the earth and a global platform.

It's like a shit Netflix action movie.

I was going to say that’s what you you get when you put entertainers(or reality TV stars) in real positions in power but Zelenskyy has worked well so it’s back to character and what having power either brings the worst or best out of people.

We shouldn’t be surprised that there’s a lot of evangelical shite being spoken, some of the people who fled to the what became the USA due to ‘religious persecution’ were actually in a time of when religion(/society) wasn’t that tolerant were even more pious intolerant fun killers and found to be too hard core to people who were already pretty strict.

I think the Netflix series of the Trump era will be an eye opener,us living thru it doesn’t present it in its absurdness the same way as someone on the outside watching the series would.

The biggest heist in mankind’s history.

Strap yourself in, it's about to get a whole lot worse.

Ours are between 10-15p on petrol and diesel. I can easily see this going north of £2/l.

Which is why a far right billionaire will buy Netflix and make the fantasy version where Trump is the all conquering completely sane genius who really deserves the Peace Prize.

America is beyond help at this point trump still has 35-40% of the population on side and support for his war is up slightly on the 1st week  Their media is a large part of why thats the case

Anyway the anti drone gun & radar installation on the roof of the US embassy in Baghdad is burning  , after being hit by... a drone.

NKorea is flexing its ballistic missile threat at a time when the US is flirting Patriot missile stocks off across the middle-east. You can't be one-dimensional on the world stage,

YEONCHEON, South Korea/TOKYO, March 14 (Reuters) - North Korea fired more than 10 ballistic missiles into the sea on Saturday, South Korea's military said, as the U.S. and South Korean forces conducted military drills and U.S. President Donald Trump renewed overtures towards Pyongyang for dialogue.
Japan's coast guard said it had detected what could be a ballistic missile that fell into the sea. It appeared to have fallen outside Japan's exclusive economic zone, public broadcaster NHK said, citing the military. https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/north-korea-fires-possible-missile-towards-sea-during-us-south-korea-drills-2026-03-14/

I remember reading an article by a historian, explaining the essential differences between American and European culture. It basically boiled down to the fact that we booted out all our religious nut-jobs, so what do you expect?

One major point of difference was that Americans (somewhat bizarrely, given the nature of modern capitalism) associate making tonnes of money with somehow being godly, as if its some kind of reward from heaven. Hence the veneration of idiots like Trump by the evangelical lot.

Going to add the the global disruption

Obviously Iran pissing off its neighbours, but theyll be asking questions about why their American allies aren't able to defend them...

No surprise indeed; it was discussed on something I was watching a few days ago. Does Saudi Arabia have any oil terminals (ie tanker loading facilities) in the Red Sea, which would avoid passing through the Bab? Assumes tankers can get through Suez, of course.

So... Trump's gone on Truth Social to ask allies to send ships to the Strait of Hormuz to help protect shipping.

Now,  I'm pretty sure he said he didn't want the UK to send ships to a war that had already been 'won'.

What a pathetic, dangerous fool.

Even if we wanted to do this, the reality is that due to defence cuts and delaying orders during 16 years of Tory rule, the Royal Navy doesn’t have enough serviceable frigates or destroyers to reinstate the Armilla patrol.

12 Type 42 destroyers replaced by 6 Type 45s, of which three are in pieces in Portsmouth dockyard, and while we’ve got 13 frigates on order, the Type 23s they’re supposed to be 1:1 replacements for are being paid off as they’re worn out.

Yep. He also said they had completely destroyed the Iranian Navy (all floating at the bottom of the sea, apparently). Then, a few days later, said they had sunk 16 (IIRC) Iranian mine-laying boats. I think we are all quite sure we don't need to believe a single word that comes out of his, or any of his mouthpieces' mouths.

The current American government are copying Israel’s current government - they lie and they lie and they lie and they lie and they lie………

I don’t believe a single thing they say so **** them, they deserve everything thrown at them - be that words, accusations or missles/bombs.

It's Trump, don't look for something that looks like a credible well thought out plan. It could simply be seizing something to use in negotiations with no thought to any other consequences.

Pretty amazing to think that Trump's administration never thought to get more assets into the area to deal with the threat to shipping. Not exactly challenging to realise Iran would weaponise the strait, it's been a consideration for decades.

Looking to sacrifice UK and Chinese ships and crews.

With China, China is an economic ally, and Chinese registered or flying the Chinese flag have safe passage.

I'd say he's hoping a tanker along side a Chinese ship flying their flag will go through without being blown to smithereens.

Send in the Israeli navy. They've about 50-60 ships.

President Trump was warned by General Caine, but Trump chose to believe his instinct that Iran would capitulate.

He's got form over a decade for ignoring intelligence professionals and going with his gut.

genuinely intrigued to see how the RW press report this tomorrow, they are desperate for the UK to go fight in Trump's mad war

yet i suspect the feelings of most of the British public are more along the lines. of....

Send in the Israeli navy. They've about 50-60 ships.

But only a relatively small number of surface combatants suitable for escorting tankers.

And they’d have to go round Africa as others have said.

A longish read of the turmoil inside the White House as Trump ramps up World War T.

“Now you can put (up) a map of the region, and you will not be able to find a space where escalation is not happening,” Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al-Ansari said this week. “This is the biggest ‘I told you so’ in the history of ‘I told you so’s.’”

Unleaded was £1.72 per litre.

Price of diesel in Germany is averaging €2.18 and €2 for petrol whilst here in France it's pushing €2 and €1.80 respectively.

Wonder if the yellow vests will be out in force again soon?

I would also put money on China invading Taiwan within a year or two. They've seen how bloody useless Trump is at his job and take the opportunity to strike whilst he's still president.

So the Shart Shooter has posted again in what is now war/geopolitics by social media:

"the Countries of the World that receive Oil through the Hormuz Strait must take care of that passage, and we will help - A LOT!"

"The US will also coordinate with those Countries so that everything goes quickly, smoothly, and well," "This should have always been a team effort, and now it will be."

The bold is by me.

So without so much as an fyi to allies before the war, now he wants other countries to pick up the pieces. I'm sure another poster on here said this is exactly what he'd likely do.

I hardly consider Pistol Pete Hesgeth with a pedalo to constitute a coalition, although id find it very amusing to see him shredded by a missile to end up as fish food - in fact I'd pay to watch that

It really could go very badly wrong couldn't it? Damaging or even sinking one of these escort ships would be of huge propaganda value to Iran and further shut down the strait.

More slaughter over the hubris of one old fool.

It's talk from President Trump in an attempt to control the price of oil, it's revealing that that he won't reveal who the allied nations are.

Nobody will commit to the Strait of Hormuz while there's a war ongoing. The other risk is that someone accidentally shoots a passenger aircraft down as happened under President Reagan's watch in 1988.

I think that the rest of the world will use the Strait to force US de-escalation. End the war and we'll help by offering additional defensive support in the region, mine-clearance, etc.

My guess is pretty much that too.

Combined with how few ships the RN actually have and not being able to afford losing any. Hence the hints about drones.

As above, even if Starmer were to fold, the RN doesn't have the ships to actually support this.

In the mid-1980s when the Armilla patrol was a standing commitment, we had 48 frigates and destroyers. We now have 13, of which 4 are in refit. This is why there wasn't a ship ready to go when this all kicked off and getting HMS Dragon out of refit quicker than planned was a necessity.

You can stick as many warships as you like out there, but nobody is going to sail an oil tanker or container ship through there uninsured, and the insurance companies won’t touch them with a barge pole.

At the end of the day, the world is ****ed and everyone’s going to be sucked in to this because Netenyahu has used his useful idiot in the White House to start the full on regional war that he’s been itching to have for decades
