Not sure about the natural resources but Israel has invested massively in high value digital industries. Cyber security, chip manufacturing, etc. The UK's GDP per capita was roughly twice that of Israel in 2007. Now it is roughly equal.

Aye. I imagine Hegseth was probably regarded as possessing good character when he served, likely compliance rather than a values alignment.

He also got given the boot from two veterans advocacy groups over concerns about his behaviour including sexual impropriety, drunkenness, financial misconduct and probably more. Basically a perfect fit for Trump.

This whole thing is a big gamble from Trump and however it turns out (my guess would be badly) hopefully it’s going to wake people up to the reality that the rules based international order is a lie and always has been, it’s just a comforting lie we like to tell ourselves. All US presidents operate the same way he’s just more blatant with it.
