Dear All,
Have joined the real world by buying my daughter's ipod nano ( 3rd gen ) to allow her to upgrade to a Touch.
I now realise.... I simply can't keep the ear pieces in my ears, they just seem to drop out no matter what I do or how hard I screw them in!
I also don't like to push them in too hard, as I have nightmares about hurting/perforating eardrums, being an ex-diver.
So...... can anyone recommend a ( cheap ) alternative?
Can you get 'headphones' for ipods at a reasonable price?
I don't think I'll ever be a serious user, so anything expensive will simply be a waste, and reduce my bike bit buying power!!!!
thanks all

iPod earphones are cak - they sound rubbish and leak noise like mad (both music out and surrounding noise in).
How much do you want to spend?
You can get some decent ear bud 'phones with little pushy in bits of differing sizes, so you can find one that works for about £15.
I've got some Sennheiser CX-300s which are widely regarded as pretty good and are about £30 in store. I've seen them online for about £23.
Just beware of getting them from eBay and the like as there are a lot of fake ones floating around....
You need to get some smaller ears.
Don't get too small ears.....my other half has tiny ears and can't get any earphones that fit.
My Sennheisers with the smallest surround on is still way too big.....!
I find it quite amusing.
my other half has tiny ears
You're married to a mouse? Cool!

Errr... they keep falling out cos I can't get them in
i.e. my inner ear canal is too small!
...but the outers stick out.
And I've always been sensitive 😥
....and worried in strong winds 😳
Ahem.
Stumpy:
I've got an Apple store in town - is that a good place to sus them out, or are they 'top end' stuff?
Never liked ebay, and have no desire to go there!
cheers

Seinheisser sport twist-to-fit ones that have a sort of o-O sticky up bit on the top are what you need. You can get a set of the green ones off Amazon for a tenner. Horrible colour, but they work.
I use Sony phones with the behind-the-neck-band and plastic loops over the tops of yer ears. They stay on fine but mean that I can't wear sunglasses or high collared jackets. I also have odd shaped ear-holes!
Ipod 'phones won't stay in my ears either - they're just too big (the 'phones not my ears 😉 ). I use Senheisser ear buds (they come with 3 different size rubber bits so will fit varying sized ear canals 🙂 ).
CX300s are £6.95 on Play.com
If you're feeling a bit spendy, Shure E2Cs are nice, in-ear noise-isolating earbuds; they come with soft and hard rubber and foam grommets, three sizes of each (I find the foam ones grip better than the rubber ones when I'm sweating)and a long cord, and they sound bloody amazing.
Just don't use them on the bike as you won't be able to hear a thing in the outside world!
Oh, and they're £40.00
how apple managed to sell their stuff with those junk earphones really is a mystery...
I think this thread requires photos of your freakish sounding lugs! 😀
Had the same problem myself.
Bought some of these which are soft and gently squeeze inside your ear, they don't go too far into the ear as well.
What you need is a pair of iEars
sellotape
I have the same problem as the OP... even got a rubber bit stuck in there recently!!
However, on the bike i use these... cheap as chips and still allow you to hear people speak-ish.... and the most comfortable ones I've tried...

Christowkid - I got mine as a present, so am not sure where they come from.
But, you can get them from places like Amazon and Play.com. I think that John Lewis does them too.
Various brands do similar styles.
ok.... thanks peeps.
now ack from a quick ride, will investigate

The canal-phones like Sennheiser cannot go so far into the ear as to cause damage. There is a knack to getting them to fit, apart from selecting the correct size silicon eartip; first lightly put the 'phone into the ear, then hold the the outer part of the ear with thumb and forefinger and put the middle finger on the 'phone, pull the ear back and push the 'phone into the ear. Lightly moistening the silicon bud with your tongue will help it slip into place as well. Also positioning the 'phone so that the lead points forward and up and looping the lead up and over the back of the ear helps stop the 'phones being tugged out of the ear, and also helps stop microphony through the lead. I use Ultimate Ears MetroFi 220vi and SuperFi 5vi's, and that's how they recommend they're worn. Takes a while for the leads to form into shape, but it's so much more comfortable than the usual way of wearing canal-phones. The standard earbuds that come with iPods and phones can be adapted but it's not worth the money or hasstle. You can get MetroFi 220's from Apple Stores for around £45, or £35 from the 'net, and Denon canalphones start around £25, and the sound quality is outstanding, I can't recommend the UE's highly enough. They also have a good warranty; I bought a pair of SuperFi 4vi's for my iPhone, and dropped the phone after six months use onto the headphone jack, breaking an internal connection. I bought a pair of MetrFi's and put the SuperFi's to one side. Some time later I found the instructions which said they had a two year warranty, this was fourteen months after I bought them. I phoned Logitec's helpline, gave all the details, the nice lady went away, came back and asked for my details and said a new pair of SuperFi 5vi's would be in the post! The 4vi's had been discontinued so the sent me the next model up, not even requiring the return of the damaged ones. That's customer service that deserves to be highlighted.
CountZero:
thanks for your detailed method.
It's highlighted something - my ear phones have no buds - I've just realised!
Duhhhh.....
They are round mini speakers, no soft squidgy bits, and trying to get them to seat is impossible. The light has just dawned.
So.....maybe it's not canal earphones in general that's the problem, just that tat i've got.
OK....thanks for that
