A few of the recent posts sum up where I am at.

I have an iphone that I use for browsing, email, etc, when away from home.

I don't want a tablet that has similar functionality to the iphone. I want a tablet for when I don't want to lug a laptop around - eg holiday away.

Therefore, functionality closer to a laptop would be my preference

Why the **** are we still wasting breath about SD slots?
Did no one read GrahamS' post?

Voila; The iPad has an SD slot.

Here's an idea then. Get a tablet that is functionally closer to a laptop.

err because something very useful is missing (but present on numerous other brands devices), and err would negate the need for dongley things?

Would make viewing and copying photos a lot easier while away from home.

A lot easier? Really? What is it you find so difficult about plugging in a small adapter?

If its really a deal breaker then go buy one of the other brands devices. Simple.

Question for the tablet owners, i'm not trolling (genuinely interested) as my ageing laptop is ripe for replacement after i move house in April and i'm not sure what to get?

Do tablets come with stuff like MS Office?...i use this for Uni work and my timesheets for my second job are all sent to me in MS Excel format....can you print from a tablet with a traditional plug in printer or would i need to get a wireless printer too?....can they be connected to the internet hub in my house so i'm not reliant on a 3G connection?

Basically could i replace a laptop with a tablet or would i be stuffed for some tasks?

Do any of the iPad cases come with a nice little pocket for all the accessory devices that might be needed? It'd soon get lost, or forgotten, or left at home.

I did. Well I got it before even the iPad1. And with the difference in price, managed to buy both a phone and a camera too, with a bit of spare cash left over.

Nope. (for apple anyway, maybe on a windows tablet)

You can buy Pages, Numbers and Keynote (the Apple equivalent of Word, Excel and Powerpoint)
http://www.apple.com/ipad/from-the-app-store/apps-by-apple/

can you print from a tablet with a traditional plug in printer or would i need to get a wireless printer too?

Can't plug in a printer directly to the tablet, but you can have a printer plugged into a PC and have that shared. Or you can use a wi-fi printer (but only a few printers support AirPrint directly).

can they be connected to the internet hub in my house so i'm not reliant on a 3G connection?

Yes. In fact some versions of the iPad are wi-fi only.

You'd probably be stuffed for some tasks. Depends on what you use the laptop for really.

Oh...

Stock, internationally agreed microUSB socket would be nice too. Then when away, only 1 charger would eb needed for phone, kindle, tablet, etc. but that will never happen either.
Could even have the Mobile HD Link feature (now available on a number of Android, and possibly other, devices), using the standard lead, too. Half of that *may* happen, but not the standard socket/lead.

How do you manage with remembering headphones? SD cards themselves? The camera you use the SD cards with? Your keys?

I did. Well I got it before even the iPad1. And with the difference in price, managed to buy both a phone and a camera too, with a bit of spare cash left over.

Well done, you must be so pleased with yourself (extra marks for getting it before the iPad 1 too). So pleased with yourself in fact that you feel the need to come into this thread to try and justify your decision and convince yourself and everyone else about how right you were. 😉

You can do everything I think, just some things aren't quite as easy. Wouldn't want to type out long documents using the touch-screen, but my iMac keyboard pairs with it if necessary.

Impressive cos last I heard tablet manufacturers were really struggling to produce anything that could match the iPad tech-wise at a lower price.

Apple have an adapter for that too! 😯

I'd say they're hard enough to make them basically impossible - any kind of serious content producing you really do need a proper keyboard (and quite possibly a mouse or other precision pointing device). (Obviously I mean text/numeric data, not photos!)

And the micro-usb thing is a pain - and it's not just Apple. I can charge my phone, my wife's phone and my daughter's phone from the same charger, but Samsung in its infinite wisdom has decided that the tab needs a special connector instead.

Lie in bed. Now try holding your laptop above your head to read an ebook or magazine.

Try the same on the couch. Lounging and holding your laptop in one hand to read, using the other one to flick through stuff.

I'm trying to see how this is an advantage, I really am - the thing is though, I don't lie in bed holding a real book or magazine above my head to read - that just makes your arms ache. Nor do I hold anything at all in my hand when using my laptop to read stuff - it sits on my lap, thus reducing strain. Maybe I'm just not the target market for one, but ISTM people come up with reasons why tablets are an ergonomic advantage when doing things that aren't particularly ergonomic.

The laptop I'm typing on is a lot thicker than an iPad, and twice the weight granted, but in terms of long dimensions there's not a huge amount in it. I think we've also agreed there are lots of things you just can't do on a tablet - like type on a proper keyboard when making long-winded forum posts.

I think that was the start of Nokia's long decline. When they went from 1 standard charger and connecter to about 20.
