I've previously whined about stw not downloading for a few m every now and again (on chrome/W7/avast) but now it's happening more and more frequently, my photostream on flickr does the same, or shows with only a few pics present (this on IE too) - kind of spoils a photo web service.

if I search via the url bar, no pics come up on the image search (and it's uk.search-results not google?)

TO avoid throwing the laptop out the window, do I have to get technical?

Could try booting into safe mode (with networking) then run;

Rkill

and then run;

Malwarebytes (full scan)

Clears up any nasties that may be lurking.

Sounds like you have some malware that's proxying all your internet requests, probably sniffing passwords etc. The reason images are failing is because the proxy server / zombie you're connected to is overloaded. As above make sure the machine is thoroughly disinfected.

THREAD RESURRECTION

**** me I am currently getting pages to dl about 1 in 5 clicks.

Quick malware scan shows nowt. I switched off Windows firewall (there's on in the router, I think), no difference.

Is it time for petrol to be involved?

Do you have the tools & ability to do a full re-build of your PC?

I don't know - which I guess means no. I'm not aware of a key for W7 - certainly no cdrom.

It's <1 year old!

If it came pre-installed then there would likely be a sticker on the PC and the "CD-ROM" could be in a recovery partition. If you can back up all your data and anything else you want to keep, a clean install might well be the quickest way of resolving this.

Other options are switch to MSE instead of Avast or even try using IE instead of Chrome? I've found in the last few weeks that Chrome seems to be misbehaving and causing a lot more disk activity that I would really expect (on a few machines as well).

Instead of a complete rebuilt you could also try using system restore. If it is less that a year old the original restore point may still be in place (click on the windows icon bottom left and type 'system restore' to get there) which would allow you to either go back a month or two or even back to where you started. If you don't have any restore points then there may actually be malware involved 🙁

ooh there's a W7 key on a sticker!

An off/on may have helped a little...of course windows now wants another off/on for updates 😐

Cougar: kind offer, I'll maybe try LB's suggestions before troubling you (I could only do anything in the evening) unless it would be quick for you?

Al - could you have a look at your IP settings?

You'll need to go through Control Panel...Network and Internet....Network and Sharing Centre. You'll find "Change Adapter Settings" over on the left. When you click on that,a new box will pop up with the name of your Local Area Connection. Click on that to get Status. Then on Properties. Then TCP/IPV4, then the Properties for that (sorry it's so long winded).

What does it have down for "Obtain DNS Server??

That may not be good news :(. If you are at work try downloading it onto a memory stick and installing from there at home. Otherwise I've put the Win7/64b verion up here for you:

https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B-apgnXbuSeQTUl6ZmJBTkZ0Q0U
(for anyone else - downloading exe from random links is clearly insane 🙂 )

druidh's stuff is valid as well but if you are getting any web pages your DNS is probably ok.

(I could only do anything in the evening)

First evening I'm going to have free is next week now.

That may not be good news

It is starting sound very much like an infection, TBH. Kinda difficult to diagnose 'blind' but there's some good advice above already re: rkill / MBAM and rebuilds.

Where are you geographically?

Oh, of course,

Is there anything else on your network? Is it just one machine that's infected? Do you have a son in his bedroom running bittorrent?

Tried a wired connection rather than wireless?
