I've posted lots on STW and received some great advice (cheers!), but it does strike me sometimes as the last place to look for a definitive answer for anything. No matter what gets asked, there will be lots of conflicting opinions and you can easily pick a side to suit your need. Is this what is called learning through (other people's) experience?

Wait for SFB/TJ to post.

Take the opposite view.

On balance, tends to be RIGHT 😉

(I realise the flaw as demo'd by the depression thread, thanks)

I find that if I want an opinion, an Internet forum (or an old-school BBS - www.mono.org ) is the best place to go. If I want a factual answer, I'd hit google (or, I guess, go to a topic-specific forum).

What I mean is,

If I want help contesting a speeding ticket, I'd ask on Pepipoo. If I wanted (say) help disassembling a HollowtechII BB, I'd ask on here.

Doesn't mean you can't get opinion as -well- though.

I come here specifically for other people's opinions. Isn't that the point?

I already know what my opinions are. And I can get facts from google.

It doesn't matter how big your backpack is ffs! GIve me links to facts or I'll stay up all night worrying about how the internet might collapse with wrongness

True, but my perhaps badly worded OP was asking if a forum is the best place to get a definitive answer. I'm not sure the web is any better since you click on a link and invariably get one answer, click on another link and get a different answer.

I get disappointed when the internet doesn't give me the answer I want 😀

Even if you didn't want an opinion - you'll get one

No matter what gets asked, there will be lots of conflicting opinions and you can easily pick a side to suit your need.

You could go to a couple of university professors or doctors in a teaching hospital and still get conflicting opinions. Try getting a learned consistent opinion on climate change; you'll still get conflicting opinions the same as here on this forum. I can't imagine any scientific field where there aren't conflicting views. S'life, innit.
