Google Chrome will monitor ads and ad block an entire site if it detects ads exhibiting 'abusive' behaviour.
Be interesting whether this will trigger 'you're running an ad blocker' code on sites that block content for ad-blocking.
Not sure if the persistent problem ads shown on here will fall into the 'abusive' category and I wish they'd add those video ads that auto play with sound on to the list...

You can disable auto-play (mostly) in Chrome's settings.
I can't see this having a vast impact on STW given that AIUI most ads are served via Google anyway.
