Having just binge-watched all of LoG, I quite fancy watching this. It seems that Sky has series 2 and 4 (bizarrely), but I can get S1 with a free trial of Amazon Prime.

My question is, am I missing anything by just starting as S2? Is there running gags and characters from the first series that I won't understand, or is it all self-contained?

No they are all completely independent separate stories. I don't recall any last bling between episodes at all other than being set at no. 9.

As above separate stories each episode. Very clever writing. I haven’t seen them all, but it’s an impressive program. Riddle of the Sphinx was superb. They really throw some twists in!

Series one has "a quiet night in," if you like the rest of it then this is a must see episode!

They're fantastic (my wife and I have just watched all 3 series on I-Player after watching the LoG specials over Christmas). Series 4 is absolute genius!

Cheers all. I'll make a start on S2 then.

my wife and I have just watched all 3 series on I-Player

There's four series, not three. And I didn't see season 1 on iPlayer?

They’re all brilliant! They’re all dark. Some of them are really really twisted. The Christmas Krampus one was really wrong.

You’re in for a treat. The first episode of series 2 ‘La Couchette’ is genius!

Hilarious

Was that the cupboard/soap one?

> shudder <

Every episode is so much more than humour in them. Each one is a perfect short play. Amazing writing.

Brilliant stuff. Probably the best crafted comedy on TV now. Very clever, very funny, very dark at times.

And yeah, the Krampus Christmas episode is pure twisted genius.

These guys are genius writes, I thought LoG recent run was great and the characters are so strong, but the No 9 stuff is just fantastic writing and performances. The detail they go into to make each episode is amazing. There aren't many better writers out there just now.

Each and every epidode is wondefully unique. To be able to write in such a variety of styles and play with so many genres so brilliantly is pretty astounding.

And as if that wasn't enough, to then pull off such brilliant performances.... Reece Shearsmith's recent performance in 'Bernie Clifton's dressing room' episode was so perfectly observed I had to watch it 3 times. Wonderful stuff.

Planned on watching this for age and this thread prompted me to do just that. Seen the first 3 S1 and they are just brilliant, typical of the writers dark humour too.

My question is, am I missing anything by just starting as S2?

You'd be missing S1 E2 'A quiet night in'

As an aside.... Shearsmith and Pemberton's interview for RHLSTP (on youtube probably) was just as the idea for Inside No 9 was forming in their heads and apart from being a very funny interview it gives quite a bit of insight into where the series came from. Its really a lot closer to the core of their work than LoG- LoG was a side project that happened to get traction (i remember seeing it in preview week at the fringe, all done in tuxedos and sellotape)

Yes, we caught up on the first 3 series on I-Player and session 4 is running now.

As above I don't think that all are still on I-Player but they were until recently.

Check out Psychoville too as well if you can (I think it's on Netflix).

As for inside No.9 - superb, jaw dropping, WTF, TV. And the one with Sheridan Smith was a stunning piece.

League of Gentlemen, Psychoville, love em. Inside No. 9, can take or leave... the comedy duo one was, ok.. dunno, seemed to rely too much on the naffness of the old "variety" comedy. Nah, didn't do it for me. And I thought the rhyming one (oh yeah, it was in a hotel, one bloke playing 2 parts) was just dull.
Some are better than others. But not a patch on their other stuff.

I get that, I was thinking it's a shame to judge it purely by the description of "it's a comedy" and should therefore make you LOL.

Just caught up with the series so far, love it, glad to see it wasn’t just me who enjoyed 12 days of Christinefrom the last series, don’t normally cry at stuff but that had me blubbing pretty hard!

That's is where you have gone wrong. Inside No 9 is not a comedy. Thought this weeks episode was pretty good and no attempt at comedy at any point.

I watched the earlier ones online as missed them originally. Faves are:

A Quiet Night In
The 12 Days of Christine
Séance Time
The Riddle of the Sphinx
And all from the 4th series so far.

Not sure I want to watch The Harrowing again, good but eek....

I've thought about it quite a few times since watching it, which is a mark of how good it was. And kudos to Sheridan Smith for such a fine performance.

On the back of this thread started S2 - and thoroughly enjoyed all the four episodes I've seen so far, but particularly 12 Days of Christine.

Then the wife said i could get S1 on her Amazon prime account and so started on them now - good twist in Sardines but then 'A quiet night in' was just brilliant. Not so much for the twist, which i sort of predicted but just so damn clever mixing up all the elements and chucking in a bit of slapstick......

Why is stuff like this 'niche' and Mrs Brown's Boys primetime....... I know it's audience figures but if the public can't see it, they shouldn't be allowed to operate machinery or use knives as clearly they're not competent.

I had missed out on this until the current series and am now working my way slowly through the old episodes on Netflix (although series 3 is not available). Quite the best television I have seen in years. Favourite so far are A Quiet Night In and Bernie Clifton's Dressing-room. This week's was light on laughs but seriously dark.

And I thought the rhyming one (oh yeah, it was in a hotel, one bloke playing 2 parts) was just dull

If there's a criticism to be levelled, it can be a bit referential - I watched the Cheese & Crackers one with my lad and loved it, but unlike me, my lad wasn't a kid in the early '80s so didn't get all the stuff about Crackerjack, and who the hell are the Krankies? Come to that, how many people under the age of 40 know who Bernie Clifton was? The lad's not thick, he just doesn't have the cultural reference points of early '80s naff telly to set it against.

I think Zanzibar (the hotel one written in iambic pentameter) is similar but more so - if you are into Shakespeare, it was brilliant, but if not, I can imagine enjoying it much less. I saw the twins confusion thing and immediately thought "brilliant riff on Twelfth Night" but if you don't know the play then it's just a bloke playing two parts and talking in rhyme for no apparent reason.

Perhaps that's the answer as to why no. 9 is "niche" while Mrs Browns Boys is "mainstream" - you're not expected to have an in depth knowledge of 500 year old plays to get the gags in Mrs Brown's Boys...

just finished watching the lot now, and finished off with last weeks 'to have and to hold'.  wow!  that was dark!!

favourites have been that one (THATH), the trial of elizabeth gadge, 12 days of christine, the bill and diddle diddle dumpling.  it really is superb writing, DDD going from comedy farce to heartbreak effortlessly.

didnt really enjoy the karaoke or call centre episodes, but could still see how well written they were.

really very good entertainment, worth the licence fee just for that!

Was anyone aware, but that silver hare ornament that appears as the curse in this week's episode, has appeared in every episode from day 1. Even in the one done in a karaoke booth, someone pulls out a photo and it's on the mantelpiece in the photo.

My Wife mentioned this after reading it on the internet (although we hadn't spotted it); we might have to re-watch them all to see if we can spot it.

We've loved the whole 4 series - absolutely brilliant!

Enjoyed the last one, good to see Nigel Planer involved. The one before with the TV awards was pretty dull though. Mostly good, but a bit hit & miss imo.
