Have any of you been able to do something about the :-

Go to work, get paid, spend pay, go to work cycle by having alternative sources of income ?

It would be interesting to hear from anyone who has managed it or is just thinking about it.

What got me thinking about this was not the idea of getting rich, but more from the angle that busy people are just too busy, being busy to reflect or initiate change so they can become less busy.

A line from a film ( cant remember which film) that has always stuck in my mind, from a loathsome woman " I hate speaking with working class people, they are just simply too busy to spend anytime thinking of anything interesting to say"

perhaps if we took some time to think about it there may be an easier path to take.

The obvious one is money made from renting property etc but I am sure there will be others ways.

The internet seems to have a fair share of "loons" and stuff about filling in surveys to get extra money, so not that helpful.

A bit rambley I know, but I am sure you get the idea..

Matched betting? Makes a couple of grand per year if done right.

Or, selling sofa's you haven't paid for?

I made thousands doing matched betting in 2008-2010. Easiest and most fun money i've ever made. Helped many, many people do the same (and took my cut!).

FX trading.

I've traded forex for years, but i've yet to meet a consistently profitable retail trader. It's easy to generate an "income" over weeks or even months if you're good/experienced, but I'm hugely sceptical of anyone who tells me they've been profitable for more than a year.

puts 'matched betting' on the list*

*list includes:
- fix those watches you bought a year ago to fix up and sell
- buy some bikes off eBay and split and sell them
- dabble in the stock exchange
- get that money off that solicitor who owes you £3k

Note: this may not be legit!!

but hypothetically make some extra money by offering your day job services privately on sites like 5 squid.com

if your fortunate to have a job that allows you to do this during your working day (on breaks obviously) you can make a tidy sum

eg architect, cad design, Photoshop work

time and tools/software are paid for already and income is tax free

money is all payed directly into your paypal (Black ops fund) so no need to bother the other half with those silly little bike related purchases

I do other stuff to supplement my day job - freelance writing, mixing, mastering etc. but it's not easy, and it's still a complete pain in the neck, and only really pays peanuts. The only thing that was good on the cash/effort stakes was writing a full blown book on a commercial basis - 6 weeks work in the evenings on top of my normal job and it still pays me twice a year a few years later - the returns are diminishing down to less than £500 a year now, but it start out much higher, and given the short amount of time it took me to write, the £5000 or so I've made from it is a good return - better than I could have got on anything else.

Retained firefighter.

Didn't sign up for the money, more to help in the community and do something hands on and useful which was a change from the (desk based) day job, but have to admit the extra few quid each month is useful.

Training in the first 12 months is quite a big commitment, and it helps to have an understanding other half!

My bicycle expenses I try to earn outside of the regular income I earn for the family. I work for mountain mayhem doing the course and set up and now bespoked hand built show. I also represent a large country estate for commercial event lettings and hope to start doing an event of our own soon. Bit of writing also. In fact, I'm at the point where my extras are turning into what could be a career change! I started out on all of this for the love not the money, giving time and skills for free with plenty of enthusiasm.

Mate of mine sells small stuff on eBay that is cheap & easy to post. He spends an hour a week or so getting it all ready in bags and then just sticks address labels on when he sells something.
He only makes ~£0.5-1.00 profit on each item but reckons he sells enough in a month to cover all their food shopping.

I did a bit of buying/selling shares for a while but more out of interest than with an aim to make money.

I've mates, of whom 1 is a hairdresser by day, male escort by night. One is a (forget the exact title) science student by (some) days, stripper by night and my housemate buys and sells collectables/toys/lego/anything he can get his hands on for less than rrp. He has 2 bedrooms full of the stuff, plus part of his mums house and his ex's attic. His 2 sons dont have their own rooms. I reckon he has ~£30k of stock dotted about. This is despite earning 3 times the national average wage.

I worked in the lbs at the weekend for a bit of pocket money

I keep anything that resembles copper and weigh it in. We're currently in the throes of completing on a nice little venture that will require stripping internally. It will hopefully have oodles of cable in it...

peterfile = How did you make thousands? You would have to make a lot of bets.
How did you manage to register with lots of different identities?

Made £15000 into £28000 from buying shares at share.com
Shame it's only a practice account.
And it was purely fluke, so I don't have the balls to do it for real.

Made £4k over a couple of years doing matched betting. If you were in on it when it first started then there was serious £££ to be had. Not so lucrative now though.

You're exploiting bookie's offers e.g. signup deals, reloads, big sporting event bet refunds etc.

Some of the signup deals could net £150-£200 if you waited until they had a decent offer on.

Doing all the easy/safe bookies back then netted about £1,300. Starting with a decent amount of float, it would take me a month, just putting a couple of bets on in the evening (mostly high odds horses).

As I said, I helped lots of friend/family people do the same. Rather than try to sell the idea to them, I'd just offer to put up the float, then it truly was no risk to them. I must have helped about 12-14 people over that 2 year period, just doing it every other month. Probably took a total of close to £15k, half went to my friends/family and half went to me.

One particularly good memory was in the lead up to the summer of 2008. I offered to do it for 3 mates on the basis that we would stick all the proceeds into a pot and have a weekend away. I hadn't told them how much we'd make at this point, wanted to keep it a surprise and keep the pressure off me (if they'd know how much was coming they'd have spent it before I could make it!). A few months later I had about £4k in the pot and we all went to San Diego to visit one of our mates and then Vegas 🙂 That was a really happy trip, since none of them were really in the position to do it otherwise. I'll never forget being able to tell them down the pub one Friday night that we had £4k. They were expecting about £400! Thank you bookies!

Buy stuff from China and sell at a profit.

I do E-Cigs, as many know, but there is loads of other stuff - electronic gadgets, phone cases, bike lights etc. You can do car boots, market stalls, ebay, your own retail outlet, or just mates down the pub. It's not hard.

I have a couple of properties I rent out, had one since '96 the other since 2003. The first one makes a very decent 21.7% return on investment, the 2nd one not nearly so good but still healthy.

Do a bit of eBay selling too and that pays for bike stuff I buy.

Gamblers Anonymous?

Certainly for me matched betting completely put me off gambling. I took about £2k from sign ups, reload offers and some arbs before running out of safe bookies. Doing it taught me just how much of an advantage bookies generally have.

I've helped various friends do the Bet365 offer as it can quickly and easily return a £150 profit or more.

I used to do wedding photography. It bought me lots of nice kit and made a nice wedge at IRO £1100 a time, 1-2 weddings a month in the summer and 3 or 4 over the winter.

Got sick of it though as it was your Saturday gone for the wedding, then most of Sunday processing then a few evenings designing the album. I didn't want to miss my daughter growing up so sacked it off and sold all the nice camera kit.

Started off doing £350 weddings but was inundated so kept putting the price up (and standard of album and day) until I wasn't doing loads a month. Problem was, they got more demanding too.. Should have stuck it at around the £800 region. Those weddings were the most fun!

i did the matched betting thing after seeing it on here a few months ago. probably made around £70 with 4 or 5 bookies before running out of decent offers, and also being a bit scared of having a lot of money tied up with a bookie, and the fine print insisting on further bets before withdrawing money.
from what i remember you have to have a few hundred quid maybe in some bookies clutches and hope youre not gonna get shafted by the small print.

still get emails now trying to entice me back, but just not sure im clever enough to pick through that small print. theyre not daft these bookies, just wish id been around when it was more lucrative.

Buy a load of batteries & chargers from DX & sell them as a UK seller.
People seem happier knowing that they come from a UK seller, despite it being the same item.
At the price DX charge vs UK prices, you could afford to chuck away & replace anything that comes back as faulty.

Deposit £200, get a £200 free bet. Bet365's odds tend to be fairly good so it's easy enough to match with Betfair.

Having done a couple of weddings informally, I can't say I'd like to do it as a pro, the pressure to get the shots rights given the once in a lifetime opportunity would be too much pressure eg if a camera decides to fail at the wrong moment....

Yep.... Worked for me. One year about 12 years ago made me the deposit for my house.
Nowadays I do private electrical work for people, and building services drawings and electrical designs where I can. Really eats into my time though.

I used to make a small but reasonable amount by flying internet spaceships and selling imaginary things I found with them. Worked out a fairly poor hourly rate but then, I was in theory playing a game. (in practice it wasn't that much fun after a while!)

So i sold my internet spaceship dude for an amount which the internet said was small, and yet common sense says was completely insane, considering he was essesntially a digital photograph and a text file.

Factory worker by night, wood chopper by day 😉

This time of year I can make more at a weekend shifting wood that what I make in a week at the factory!

Sadly it's very seasonal and this season is no way near as busy as last!

Would love to find enough summer weeend work, mowing, hedge trimming, gardening etc. to dich the factory, but it's not happened so far.

That's why you have back up equipment with you.

It was way scarier in the old film days which is when I started, wondering if the more difficulty lit shots were going to be ok or not.

Under expose the dress a bit and you're laughing. Set the flash to fire one stop short and you retain shadows under people's hats under summer sunshine, the rest is crowd control

I would guess.... that it is usually more efficient to spend the time furthering yourself in your day job to boost your income.

I'm a landlord though, very occasionally get asked to carry out IT security reviews (this is a bit like my day job) and I make a regular but quite small income from drawings. I always have at least one paid for drawing on the go at any time although the income is more often wine, whisky or other goods rather than actual cash. Not bad considering I rather enjoy it and don't think I'm that good.

Fixing buying/selling phones/tablets. Little jobs for mates for no cash just "a crate" ahem.

Used to do reposessions for a pals debt collection agency that made a few quid on friday and sat nights but 3 geezers in a transit and a lump of timber put me off that for a while : p

Used to buy/sell retro gaming stuff but due to media people now trying to sell super nintendos for 2k
