Fred Defence Flag Wave

+1.

I had my share of run-ins with Fred - but to be honest I didn't see any harm in it and I often enjoyed the debate, infuriating as it could be.

I've also met him face-to-face over a pint or two and found him to be a perfectly decent chap.

Speaking of which, could you change the "photos which you are proud of" thread to "photos of which you are proud"?

+1, always irritates me, that

I just laughed really loudly in my office at that. That elicited a few funny looks...

I wasn't sure if it was a bit too close to home and nearly didn't post so glad you enjoyed it 🙂

I'm wondering if threads like this are more of a barrier now to newbies feeling like this is the place for them, than the confrontational threads are - I remember when I signed up here one thing that turned me off a bit was references to things "before the hack", "picolax" etc.

How must the forum seem to someone who wasn't on it a year ago when people frequently have multi-pagers, and constant references throughout other threads as well, to "TJ", "Fred" "the bannings" etc?

It does seem a bit like the forum looking up its own arse.

tbh I'd found the earlier synaetheasia jokes funny, i just wanted to correct the 'suffer' bit. I maybe wanted to add a bit of faux contention into the thread and get myself some notoriety

True enough - because the world outside STW is nowhere near as fascinating as the debris accumulated within the STW arse!

This is why we encourage noobs to browse the entire chat forum back catalogue before daring to post their own 'witty and amusing thoughts' on here. 😀

The catalogue is filled with comedy gems. And some filler content from TJ, Fred and TSY.

* finally gets the 'Han *' and 'riding *' reference and slaps face *

@edlong were you there for sudocrem cat? thems were the days (looks wistfully out the window)

I do actually agree that it can take a bit of time to pick up the in-jokes but when you do it's quite amusing. There's usually a helpful soul out there who'll fill people in if they ask

anyway

I have no useful contribution to make

I'm just thinking - instead of bemoaning the loss of the old big hitter demographic, maybe we should cherish the forum members we have - bearnecessities style.

wwaswas - I can't say your name, but I love you, man.
Captain BashFart - your photo threads are a Friday highlight and your post-its are most becoming.
Philconsequence - you're lovely whenever you're around, plus you like dinosaurs, which is cool.
DezB - despite your dislike of the moustache, I sense great wisdom in you.
Samurai - well, I don't need to say it, do I? You great ball of lovewarmth you.

😆

He was very anti-compulsion, anti "if you don't wear a helmet you're a moron", and pro "being realistic about the risks involved and the effectiveness of helmets". And not at all keen on being told what his opinions were

You know exactly what I mean NW!

wwaswas - I can't say your name, but I love you, man.

IIRC - it comes from him being a former weekend warrior, so it's an abbreviation of "Weekend Warrior As Was", or "Ww-as-was", which is how I always pronounce it in my head. HTH!

At least he leaves behind him the legacy of: "The Edinburgh Defense".

Have you not considered that this phrase was used to attack him and part of the bullying/goading and provoking that he put up with?
I accept he did not help himself but bullies often pick victims because of how they react but that does not make it their fault
He occasionally got personal after enough provoking like that Hilarious phrase used to ridicule him.
there was no malice

Still not getting any reason for TSY apart from Solo I never really read anyone have a bad word to say about him tbh and there are none on this thread

It does seem a bit like the forum looking up its own arse.

You never reminisce with your friends about funny things that happened in the past or friends you no longer see or that bike ride when we etc

Everyone does it

Just had a look at STW Argues and it's how I imagined a big hitter or old shut in a room arguing with themselves until they are right....

It's weeeeird on there... Like when John Malkovich goes through the portal in Being John Malkovich...

I always thought synesthesia would be a cool thing to experience, even if only briefly. I want days of the week to have colours, and food to have sounds!

Yeah, I get that, and I've read the picolax thing and found it funny (but I imagine it was much funnier appearing "live" rather than read as a complete document afterwards) but that isn't what happens with the TJ thing is it?

It's always about re-opening the arguments about whether he should have been banned, whether the people who used to wind him up should have been banned as well or instead of him, and whether the forum is a better or worse place for the banning(s). EDIT: And some comments about whether the mods are too harsh, too slack, about right, inconsistent, and whether they should publicly explain / justify their decisions.

Be honest, is there anything in this five page thread that we've not already had, several times?

An apparently top bloke in real life, who knew lots about bikes and other stuff, but who couldn't help getting into endless, pointless arguments on here (encouraged / goaded by others) until eventually he got permanently banned, along with some other users.

@Cougar/Drac

could we have a sticky thread with the links to some all time classic threads for noobs like i was/still am to learn about STW?

Or would that take the fun out of things like Picolax where i wasn't there first time round, found it from peoples references and nearly cried myself to death laughing at it

Yes it does. Everyone is responsible for their own actions and that includes their response to provocation

Yes. I've not considered it.

I always thought synesthesia would be a cool thing to experience, even if only briefly.

I recommend 1 microdot of LSD and "Echoes" by Pink Floyd. (Of course, I've no idea what that means...). 😉

Junkyard - lazarus

I genuinely just finished re-reading the epic pre-christmas religion thread we had last year... Really good in places! And it did remind me of one of the defining TJ characteristics- it could be really annoying to be on the same side as him in an argument 😆

It's weird that this forum never really seems to do gun control, that's the other staple food of discussion forums. It's less fun without an active american contingent I suppose.

We sort of did it once - a thread about clay pigeon shooting or air rifles or something to start with, some poster (who was it now?) popped up and decreed that such weapons were designed to kill therefore should be illegal. I think archery and boomerangs were at risk of being made illegal by the end.

Guns, eh? Isn't it, hmm? Small kids in the high school, jumpers for goal posts. Cold, dead hands and all that.

That's a thread about gun control, it's not a Gun Control Thread. You can tell if it's the latter, there'll be at least one person you can be completely sure is planning to shoot up a school. A gun control thread without a death threat hasn't even left the blocks.

I'm wondering whether or not, seeing as the site is a MTB site, and although the chat forum is here, it's mainly an MTB forum, newbies might actually join primarily for advice on and chat about bikes.

I'm also wondering what it is about people that makes them open threads they know they're not going to like, only to the (a) get offended, or (b) comment on moaning about said thread.

i had a really enjoyable debate with an american guy on a fishing boat in new zealand about gun control. It was staggering the amount of firearms he owned "for personal defense"*
I managed to eek out of him that he'd only been burgled once and all they'd nicked were guns. I know it's a cliche but he didn't see the tinge of irony in that
