I've followed the normal rules

effect - convert to shape - rounded corners - chosen my desired corner radius

then when i place an image underneath it and choose object-clipping path-make

it crops the picture to the box but without the rounded edges, pic is just squared?

any ideas?

yes - expand the shape first*

You'll know you've done it when you've got two vertices on the corners instead of 1.

*Object > Expand Appearance

Alternatively, if you want to be able to change the radius later, so expanding it isn't desired, you can double-click on the newly formed group (drill down) and then you can apply the rounded corner to the mask shape.
Then when you go back up a level, it should retain it's curved mask.

That is an awesome tip, thanks! Always wondered if that was possible. I have been using Illustrator professionally for about 8 years now but still learn new ways of doing things on a regular basis!

Same here. Illustrator has so many ways of doing things. Every time I look at a tutorial I learn something new.

I've only recently started using Graphic Styles and Symbols (even though I used symbols a lot in Flash, I never even noticed them in Illustrator for years).

Yeah, graphic styles are great. They make it so much easier to change things around quickly. Plus I can't believe I did things like multiple strokes, etc, the hard way for so long! Maybe we should have an Illustrator support group and post up the useful tips as and when we find them out! Seems to be a few regular users on here?

I have been starting to get into scripting using Applescript lately. Hard going because although the documentation is reasonable there are very few working examples of code on the web but I am starting to get to grips with it now. Very useful when dealing with repetitive tasks or variable data (which is mainly what I am using it to help with).
