As its my turn for the kids gym run I'll be being sent to ALDI for dishwasher tablets and washing powder. Any other randomness that can accompany my "cheap" shop?
50 Watt adjustable thermostatic Soldering Iron - £8.99
I didnt need on either
https://www.aldi.co.uk/en/specialbuys/thursday-6th-february/product-detail/ps/p/sewing-kit-in-a-tin/
TBH, went into my new Aldi the other day and was utterly uninspired by anything they had to offer. Even the food wasn't as much of a bargain as they like to portray.
Yes, do the rest of your shopping there and save some money.
HTH. 😉
Not the Crane cycling longs - they are hideous.
They did have some commuting trousers that looked okay. And some ski thermals for a fiver.
Aberdeen Angus fillet steaks, really good steak, as good as a butchers steak IMO. Their red pesto is cracking too.
I like their chorizo.
And mayo, better than hellmans. Not hard, granted.
The mayo has been purchased before and is on the good list.
Cashew nuts, beer, random tools, cured meats, cereal bars, cereal, fruit & Veg, pizza, chilli flavour peanuts, accondiments etc
All those things are as good if not better than the known brands (tools excluded) and much cheaper.
P.s some of the tools are fine others are cheap rubbish. The 1500w SDS drill i got for £40 is frankly superb for the money!
Killie pies
Do buy fresh fruit, veg, meat, banks' ale, hams and cheese.
Do not buy Aldi monster munch or instant coffee. I'd swerve their stock red wines, as well, although they do get some nice ones in now and again.
No tool that may be employed on your bicycle should ever be bought from Aldi.
Aberdeen Angus fillet steaks, really good steak, as good as a butchers steak IMO.
Not in my experience. They're as good as the premium ranges from other supermarkets, and are cheaper.
As to what to buy: booze. I've never had a bad bottle of wine from there costing £5 or more. Plus the Toro Loco red is less than £4 and surprisingly nice.
bags of toffees mmmmmmm
You need to be aware of the unique (asfaik) "60-Day Guarantee",you would expect 12 months on almost everything you buy,but Aldi do only 6o day gtee on their non foods (Electricals have 12 months I was told).Ok if you're buying a cheep pack of nails or a simple hammer etc.I took back a Footpump bust after 5 months and was told "out of guarantee" Hmmm.so buy with caution. The food and general homestuff seems ok (it's nearly all "clones", Titan bars (Mars)*.Enjoy your shop!. *Imho nicer than Mars, but smaller size carry them on rides.
i like the williams brewery stuff.

I like their chorizo.
I prefer Lidl's (and all of lidl meat products over aldi's), this also go with their chocloate bar copies. Otherwise aldi dishwasher tab's, saxon kitchen towel, their pastrami seems fine (25% less than tesco for the same thing), pesto sauce (mozzeralla pesto being the better), passatta and instant noodles for making hugh's pot noodle (along with the chorizo) & of course the veg, oh and I love there assorted custard creams & Nutri-Grain Cereal Bar copy (apple being better one of the two). Their champion curly fries ain't bad either...
Otherwise try stuff and if you don't like it, don't buy it again, thats said we have three local stores & they vary quite wildly in quality of veg and stock
Not in my experience. They're as good as the premium ranges from other supermarkets, and are cheaper.
Hmm, maybe they are inconsistent then, as I've only ever had them twice and they were both really good, dark steaks with some really nice marbling too.
Agree with toro loco, a decent drop, and often good deals on real ale too. Their prosecco is decent as well.
i agree nobeer - but lidl meat usually is even better though.
Ah friends (I don't drink wine) recommend the Castillo San Lorenzo Rioja, and have been told to buy (for my g/f) the Toro Loco.. trouble in the Rioja is not that cheap. Had some pear cider the other day and it was ok, nothing special but not unpleasant got the apple one to try too..
but lidl meat usually is even better though.
lidl meat is very good.
[adds bhajis to the list]
As many slabs of Ritter Sport as you can squeeze in your trolley.
Free range chicken for £5.99.
It's lovely for the money.
Do not buy [s]Aldi[/s] monster munch or instant coffee.
ftfy
Forgot about the free range chicken too! Usually try and get a big un, about 7.50, roast it with a nice tarragon sauce, have the breasts for tea (feeds 3 of us) strip the brown meat and mrs NBITF makes a chicken and ham pie, and then use the carcass to make around 2L of stock, for the freezer.
Bargain.
This selling at a ridiculous <£4 and tastes like a wine you'd expect to cost ten times as much.
I had a glass last night. To me, it tastes like a £5-£6 wine, but £40? I don't think so.
Only been once so am in the discovery stage but thought their Hob Nob-esque biccies were tasty. And their ground coffee... that Toro Loco wine above was decent too. Coleslaw was nice as well - not too mayonnaisey. Their tomatoes were pretty ropey though.
I took back a Footpump bust after 5 months and was told "out of guarantee"
Hogwash.
Guarantees are in addition to your statutory rights under the SoGA, not instead of them. They can't waive your rights, that's what "statutory" means.
After five months, it's the retailer's responsibility to prove that the fault wasn't inherent at the point of sale, and they're legally obliged to repair / refund / replace to make good. If what you're saying is true, they're breaking the law.
Quite partial to the single origin ground coffee. The strongest Java is pretty good. Obviously not freshly roasted by artisans... but at under £2 a bag I couldn't care less.
Bratwurst.
It's excellent.
And another vote for the chorizo.
Been man +1, that's my standard brew now!
Frangipanes.

It definitely benefits from breathing for a while. A good hour if you can wait that long. After that it is smoooooth and very quaffable.

Being as it's a red wine, like...
2 liters of cola - 17p
oo - the gooseberry fools (39p each) are lovely
I do my main shop at Aldi now. Saving about £25/week and the quality isn't too bad, especially if you make from scratch.
Brioche 🙂
Red wine?
Breathing?
Does. Not. Compute.
My wine gets plenty of time to breathe in the 3 seconds it remains in the bottle and being finished off. 8)

This...... then go to costco for bulk anything i need thats branded
Only been once so am in the discovery stage
Bloody newcomers clogging up the aisles. One of my favourite things about Aldi was that you could do the Big Shop in about 15 minutes, but for the last few months ours has been mobbed and it takes ages to get through all the people oohing and aaahing about how cheap everything is.
I prefer the Kooliburra Shiraz to Toro Loco, but of course it is a personal thing.
but of course it is a personal thing.
No it's not, this is STW, you are right.
EVERYONE is ALWAYS right in STW.

Ahh, but that's the thing, you are. You just haven't had it argued into you yet.

This. Still fine on a midweek morning though.
Just a walk into Tesco to get a few things and an hour is lost!
The quality of their veg used to be second-to-none, but has taken a bit of a fall recently due to different storage methods.
They have some individual flapjacks at the tills usually - v. nice (not the chocolate topped ones though)and only 50p.
I used to enjoy them with a clear conscience, until I noticed each one contains 50% of your recommended Sat Fat intake!
I work in supply chain and have been reliably informed that they demand Tesco Finest as a minimum standard from their suppliers. These suppliers obviously supply all the main retailers with the same stuff, just different packaging.
+1 Bratwurst
+1 Chorizo
+1 cured meats
+1 chickens
-1 Pizza (prefer the co-op's)
+Pain au chocolate
+Gin. Their Gin is ace for <£10 a bottle.
My wine gets plenty of time to breathe in the 3 seconds it remains in the bottle and being finished off
Get one of these, worth every penny.

Makes the undrinkable drinkable.
Even this Carrefour Wine Box is quite drinkable.
And you are right.
And we are right,
And all is right, is right as right can be!
And all is right as right can be!

number 18 - not exactly true. You can tell by their own label packaging that they benchmark (and copy) against Tesco but not always the Tesco Finest.
Wild rocket. 69p a bag in Aldi, stays fresh for weeks.
99p a bag, at least, in any other supermarket, turns to wild algae after two days in the fridge.
Their 21 day-aged rib-eye steak isn't particularly cheap but it's particularly good.
Their Valpolicella Ripasso wine. £7.99 a bottle ain't especially cheap but it's the best red wine of any price range from a few notches down to a few up that I tasted over the festive period.
The Toro Loco is surprisingly drinkable as well, for a sub-£4 bottle of plonk.
Steer clear of the Glen Marnoch 18YO whisky though. Heard good things about it, gave it a go, thought it was pretty unpleasant.

Yeah my brother has one of those, swears by it. I have only experienced it once, on Christmas day. I would have happily drunk meths without realising that day....
Brioche
Curry sauce (the one with separate spice pot on the top of jar) - these are ace.
Bloomer loaves
Razors and shaving foam
Moisturiser (yes)
Energy drink (not red bull, but purple charge or something)
Choccy buttons
Java/Columbian ground coffee
Between doing the weekly shop at Aldi and bulk buying from booker every two weeks my monthly shop is down by £200
The biggest savings by far are had by the golden rule of never buying pre prepared anything. Cook from scratch. I like the deli counter at aldi, fruit and veg is good and meat is decent when I've had it.
Steer clear of the Glen Marnoch 18YO whisky though. Heard good things about it, gave it a go, thought it was pretty unpleasant.
Ditto - I didn't like it at all.
I think that whiskey was a good brand-in-disguise for one year, then different after that.
Aldi coconut milk, 68% coconut extract for a third of the price as charged by other supermarkets, plum tomatoes/chopped tomatoes/passata etc…
Chickpeas, kidney beans, baked beans and other cupboard staple etc…
In fact i'll just mail you my shopping list and you can drop it off on your way home, ta very much.
I wish there was an Aldi near us 🙁
Nearest one is 15 miles away.
Aldi coconut milk, 68% coconut extract for a third of the price as charged by other supermarkets
I used a tin of it last night. It was much thinner than the stuff I normally buy from the Asian supermarket.
Same here. If I'm in the vicinity of one these icecreams have to be purchased.I wish there was an Aldi near us
Blokes doing shopping and then actually being interested in it *shakes head*
Oh how the middle class live.
An Aldi just 200 yards from my house opened today! Yay!
Aldi museli is the dog's todge.
+ 1 for those flapjacks at the tills, I got talking to the checkout girl about them and, a week later blagged her phone number.
Date number 1 TBA 😉 ( hopefully )
Nae chickpeas in our Aldi, unless they've got them stashed somewhere weird. Main thing missing from my weekly shop there.Chickpeas, kidney beans, baked beans and other cupboard staple etc…
It's all just crap from China isn't it?
Aldi museli is the dog's todge.
Yum! 😕
the harvest morn hot oat cereal is indistinguishable from ready brek and considerably cheaper! (if you like that sort of thing 🙂 )
My local ALDI was doing Highland Park for £24.99 - bargaintastic.
Also Scottish Brie - better than cheap French Brie (albeit a bit more expensive)
The highland black 8yo is fine for an inexpensive whisky. As well as toro loco, the Italian red at the same price is good too, don't need a posh decanter a water a jug works fine. Parmesan is good, the posh taglietellie is ok but the other pastas are foul. Will try the museli
..
Chilli Moser Roth Chocolate
MMMMmmmmm....
We have started shopping there after spending fortunes in sainsburys for year. We get the staples and then top,it up,with a few buts from Marks at the weekend.
For some Toro yesterday, the musili is very good, their Pringles are the originals, stakers, and half the price! The cup soups isn't bad, the small fruit is great for the kids lunch boxes and 89p for a big bag.
Need to try the gin 🙂
Toro loco Tempranillo, massive block of mild cheese and frangipans.

A mans got to get his oats 😉
