Hey guys n girls
I wanting to put a blog together. Kind of an online diary to keep my target in sight and share the progression a bit.

No idea what so ever where to start or host etc so I thought I'd ask the hive.

Can you make them run on your own site, e.g. if I had www.flapjack.co.uk, is it easy to put a blog on it ?

Thanks

(I don't want to, but Mrs flap_jack does and I've failed at working out how to do it)

Buy a web domain from go-daddy...about £6.
Use weebly to create the website - it can just be a blog if you want.
Mourn as no-one looks at it...

Didn't know you had one. I'm looking at it and it's "quite interesting". 😉
(Found a mistake 😆 )

Blogger is OK but doesn't work too well with certain browsers. I had to download Google's bloody awful Chrome browser last night just so I could update my blog.

Aside from browser grumbles it is pretty straight forward to get to grips with.

Just looked at your blog Dr P and given that it has details of how to make your awesome full English breakfast pie on it I'm very surprised nobody reads it. That magnificent creation deserves a global audience.

Nobody reads my blog, I've seen the google stats to prove it!

Thanks, chaps. Mrs flapjack has gone to the pub and supposed to work this out in an hour, whilst I make dinner. It may be easy enough to achieve !

When I started the (pinched by Dirt) whistlerdiaries just bought the domain and stuck some basic blog software on it.

Dr P's blog bookmarked for reading on a proper screen another day.

I have been toying with trying to write one about my objective and actions to reduce my car use this year without compromising quality of life or my bank balance. Since I started three weeks ago I have saved 600 miles and am reaping financial and other benefits. Can't believe anyone would find it interesting enough to read though!

Most important thing is to just do it, you can faff about for ever deciding how to set it up best, but just writing some stuff is what actually matters. Easy to change the set up/host etc later.

Good skills Cougar. That reminded me i haven't spoken to m Mum in weeks so gave her a buzz whilst I walked the dog. Back in her good books!

MMmmm I actually have my own domain name (use it for webmail) do I have to pay to host a web page though?
Would be mintballs to have my blog on www.gravitysucks.co.uk 🙂

I actually have two servers at work thats used for network storage. Both on static IP's and I really should figure out how to put the work websites on them instead of paying for hosting.

If I figure it out I could host my blog on there???

I use nucleuscms.org to create a blog on my own site - www.paleoracing.co.uk Takes a bit of work and effort to get it looking good, but works for me.

I've been using weebly for the last few months, its pretty simple and easy to use, there is a free option and option to buy your domain through them, lots of templates to get a look you like, as we are sharing... http://www.app-uncture.com/news.html.

gravitysucks - if you own www.gravitysucks.co.uk, then simply get onto Weebly (other website creators are available) and get going!
It's really easy TBH - you just need the 'info' of your domain, pump that into weebly, then www.gravitysucks.co.uk directs everyone to your weebly site...

I finally have something put together...

Any feedback would be nice, not really sure about how long or short I should be making things but hey ho.

Don't bother nobody will read it.

Write it in notepad and save it to your PC. Even more time-efficient is to not write it at all.

Blogs are funny things. I've no idea why I do mine anymore - it's 'read' by Americans for a start and not my so-called target audience. Sometimes you get 500 hits a day, and others it drops to ten or twenty. However, as a diary for yourself and mates they kind of work. But be careful how you describe your mates on-line as I've had a few hufty puffy moments. Good luck with it though - can be addictive.

If all you want is a blog I'd recommend checking out Ghost. I'd quite like to move my blog over to it (self-hosted for me) when I get the time. I've had a play with the demo, it's really slick.

EDIT: Just read the rest of the thread, and can now see the OP has already set something up on Wordpress.

Will add it to me RSS feeds and give it all a read when I get an evening free.
