Since I'm too much of a pikey to cough it all up at once, is there anywhere I can get a mid-spec machine on 6 months interest free credit?

get a credit card with an interest free deal and then take your pick.

Pc World were doing 12/24 months 0%. They sting you for about 30% on the whole amount if you don't pay it all back in the time limit though

Have you looked at getting a "free" one with either broadband or a mobile phone contract? that's the way i got my new via my mobile and all things being equal it cost me about half its proper cost and spread over 18 months.
