Admire your patience OP.
I get the angle grinder out, loads of sparks a bit of swearing and a slightly sharper blade....

And a lost temper (in the metal). Axes really are simple and quick to sharpen with a bastard file, no need to heat them up and risk damage using a grinder.

Yeah they are both Smedbergs handles, I would love to have shop like that near me. The big one matches the shape of my Scandinavian Forest Axe perfectly, just scaled up. The quality is easily a match for the Gransfors, though obviously the fit and finish on the Gransfors is superior. I did spend a bit of time slimming the handle down with a knife before fitting, but then realised it might have been pointless if I broke it during fitting. I'll see how I get on with it but I might make the handle a bit thinner.

+1. And even if you don't draw the temper out chances are you'll ruin whatever edge geometry or profile the cutting edge has.

Woo Hoo, I won the 038 Magnum. It'll be a lot more powerful than my 034 but mechanically it is similar so it should be home serviceable. I have a couple of big Chestnuts to fell into the field at harvest time, the bigger saw should make it a little easier. ย I'd be interested to hear how better porting improves the performance.

Here's the saw, I hope the link works

Awesome work on the axe Jimjam.

So MM is the 038 just a ported version of the 034 or a bigger engine?

I see that saw has a 16" bar.... I changed my 034 bar to a 21" and it doesn't seem to have slowed it down much at all - much better length as well in my view.

I got sent a new project

Its a 3lb 10Oz American felling Ax, a Kelly True Temper.ย  I still haven't etched and hafted the last head....but that is no reason not to collect more ๐Ÿ™‚

I also found a sligtly cheaper source for the smedbergsย  http://www.oldtoolstore.co.uk/smedbergs-curved-hickory-axe-shafts-various-sizes-available-495-p.asp ย  Although i got my haft for the other head from woodsmanexperience...its awesome!
