Just chatting to a colleague fresh back from Marseille.
His experience backs up the "Russians did it" view:

After the game he said the atmosphere on the walk back was really ominous - his group escaped trouble by diving into a McDonalds (where they were locked in).
His strong advice is not to go to any game at the championships.
