this performance at the 1983 Grammys is utterly bonkers.
There was an [url= http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/09/arts/music/grammys-herbie-hancock-rockit.html?_r=1 ]article on it in the New York Times[/url] two days ago, and having read it, can't believe his act was something I was unaware of at the time.

I saw that back in the day. No more bonkers than the shows Grandmaster Melle Mel or Africa Bambaataa were putting on at the time.

I was lucky enough to see Grandmaster Melle Mel and the Furious Five (minus Cowboy) and the Jazz Café a few years ago.
The site of a room full of plump men in there 40's all close to tears and wearing Sergio / Nike track suit tops close to bursting out at the zip didn't detract from the occasion at all. It was a very emotional night.
There was a girl with us who was born in '82. I assumed it would be lost on her a bit but she still maintains it was her favourite gig ever.
He did a slightly scaled down performance of the same track on The Tube, primetime Friday night TV. I bought the album Future Shock on the strength of that performance.
