"When the fault has been acknowledged and reset, the alarm beacon [XI03] will be extinguished."

I'm not happy with extinguished as it's more appropriate when talking about fires or flame-based lights.

Any ideas?

I don't have a problem with 'extinguished' in that context, but:

Stop illuminating
Be cancelled.
Be switched off.

I wouldn't, though, say 'be de-illuminated', tempting as it is! 😉

ETA: Yeah, 'deactivated' works for me.

Cancelled and switched off, to me, suggests that it won't function again.

@ads678 - your beacon is faulty.

The alarm beacon will continue until the fault has been acknowledged and reset.

Until the fault has been acknowledged and reset, the alarm beacon will be activated.

Lights can be extinguished though, it's perfectly good grammar

@richmars - i quite like that. It's a different way in.

"The alarm beacon will remain illuminated (red) until the fault has been acknowledged and reset."

Ta.

Any more?

Extinguished is the correct word in that context IMO.

@derek_starship yeah I realised after I'd put 'sounding' it was an alarm beacon, rather than an alarm!!

Quelled?

Honestly, I'd be leaning towards plain English here. "When there's a fault, the light comes on. When the fault has been cleared, the light goes out." I'm all for florid language but there's a time and a place. And instruction guides aren't the place to be calling a spade a manually operated air-cooled earth-moving device.

Simplified English indeed.

Extinguish is acceptable for putting out a fire or stopping a light from shining so I'll stick with it.

As you were.

My fave is the Annihilation version, takes me back to the 70s/80s when we all thought it was for real....

If any member of the family should die whilst in the shelter from contamination, put them outside
But remember to tag them first for identification purposes...

Is ‘beacon’ appropriate if it’s just a light?

'signal light'
'indicator'
'warning light'

"Honestly, I’d be leaning towards plain English here. “When there’s a fault, the light comes on. When the fault has been cleared, the light goes out.” "

I'd go with this one

Ps, speaking of extinguished, the tool bar is now an ex-tool bar

You need to be careful with the use of out and off. They often don't translate as well as you'd imagine.

"when the system is reset the light will go out" could be translated to "the light will go off". Does that mean its illuminated or not?

I'd go with

"“When the fault has been acknowledged and system reset, the previously active alarm indicator light [XI03] will deactivate.”

Who is th eaudience for this?

the simpler the language the easier to undertand and the more likely things will be done properly.

Deactivate / extinguish?  eh?  goes out is simpler, clearer and easier to understand
