I needed a box to move my paintings around in and tried a plastic storage box from B&Q but it quickly cracked and was basically useless within 2 weeks so I decided to make one.
It needed to be big enough to fit frames paintings either portrait or landscape
It needed to be strong enough to be lifted in and out of the back of the truck and dragged around markets.
It needed to be light enough for me to carry on my own.
It didn't want wheels as a decent sled design underneath seemed more durable.
It ain't pretty but it works and fulfils the design criteria. The sides are 6mm ply with all edges re-enforced and the cardboard liner is just resting there to protect the frame edges.
What do I paint / seal it with to help weather proof it that won't look crap after the first slight dent?
Thompson Water Seal?
Gloss Paint?
Varnish?
Varnish on some nice patterned material, or even wallpaper

Marzipan.
I have used Ronseal Diamond hard clear satin varnish on my workbench. Long lasting and easy to apply. A 250ml tin would give a couple or three coats I would think

I've used textured spraypaint before for some disco speaker cabs I made - gives a hard wearing powdercoat style finish that can hide a multitude of sins.
