and mighty fine it is...

Argos have it on clearance for £33.00 ! other places still charging between £60 -£100 ! also the stainless steel version also on clearance

Its very chunky with a nice weight.

Best of all is that it matches my middle management Audi and log burner...(old saab and candle)

Cheers for the PSA, been without a watch for a year now and it's starting to annoy me.

Decent watch for the money, but I can't understand why they make a divers watch you can't wear diving?!

Isn't water resistant down to 100m divey enough for you? That's 10 atmospheres of pressure.

100m means you are using a blend of helium, nitrogen and oxygen that isn't breathable in shallower depths and you have to carry a third tank to 'travel' to the bottom - using traditional tanks or you have a closed circuit rebreather

or you can hold your breath and swim down and up which is world champion level competition depth

100m is a lot. but I would bet that a casio would crap out at about 50m, at which point you wouldn't want to rely on just a casio anyway.

FFS STW, I have no need or desire for a new watch but I'm now on the Argos website debating a purchase. You're a bad influence you lot are.

It'll probably cope with the shower and doing the washing up, then?

It has to be said, there's a rotating bezel on my citizen divers watch and it is THE most useful thing. I use it daily for cooking times and the like.

okay [s]Muff [/s]divers who here dives to 100m ? your holiday padi thing will only let you go down 20m max, if you're into serious diving then I guess a casio wont cut the mustard...

I myself will be using it for washing up, showers, probably not diving of any sort...wife says watch needs to come off...

I wear a watch rated to 300m. In 10 years of wearing it, it's never been in the sea....but, you never know, one day I might need to open the helium release valve whilst scrubbing a casserole dish. 😉

Seems there is some misinformation around watch depth ratings.

The rating is the static pressure the watch can withstand, not the depth of water.

http://www.watchshop.com/watch-guide/waterresistance.html

or

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_Resistant_mark

200m is the minimum you'd want for diving. 300+ for deep sea.

Despite being 30m resistance, a 30m watch wouldn't survive swimming in a standard swimming pool, for example.

The issue arises when it is moved, as when it is being worn in water, the pressure on the watch varies, and can cause seals to fail, and water to enter the watch.

As pressure is only a function of depth I'm struggling to see the logic of this. Sounds more like people in marketing have upped the numbers to make the product seem better than it actually is with little understanding what the changes mean and now no one can walk them back so they become accepted industry standards.

Why all the talk of diving, most divers wear a dive comuter that is also a watch rather than a watch as it provides alot more useful info

The OP's new watch does look very nice though

Stick your head out of the window of your car at 70 MPH

The air will press on your face with considerably more than the prevailing atmospheric pressure due to your movement.

I think this is what they mean and I can kinda see the logic in it for surfers who are getting pummelled by waves but not so much for divers who are making relatively slow movements under water.

See I thought that (I was thinking of things like a pressure washer), but it seems counter-intuitive to me that a watch can be waterproof at a depth of 30m so long as it's perfectly still, yet is at risk of ingress if I wear it whilst doing the washing up. If I swam at 70mph then it'd make sense!

Nice watch OP .
I have a watch which since its last battery change is waterproof to a depth of 0.00 of an inch ..as in not at all
Wearing it outside in the rain causes it to steam up ..once this has occurred is it then possible to make it water resistant again?
It holds a lot of sentimental value as it was the first present my missus bought me 18 years ago ...

As said above, 200m is required for diving. As regards computers, divers always double up on things that may save your life, I don't dive any more, but always had a watch and tables to back up my computer.

@hodgy send it to animal. They still service their watches. The founders went on to form Elliot and Brown watches and the old animal watches were well made. Have a couple that need to go in for new batteries.

[s]Isn't it more about the testing? So:

200m isn't a divers watch, well not if 200m to ISO 2281. Be fine for surface swimming, washing dishes etc.
ISO 6425 would cover divers watches to the depths stated.

So a g-shock at 200m/IS0 2281 is not tested to the same criteria as a divers 200m to ISO 6425. It might be fine. It might not though.[/s]

edit- all covered by plyphon earlier. Yeah watch looks fine.

I like that. I've got a voucher for Argos too, so that makes it free!

I've got an Omega Seamaster as well, should I need to dive to 300m.

I guess they use static pressure so there is a consistent baseline to test against.

It's much easier to test a watch in static pressure on a bench in a relatively small space.

Not to mention in the environment there may be all sorts of variables that could effect a watch's water resistance to actual pressure/depth (existing wear/knocks and bashes/currents/rapid movements/etc)

Agreed it is confusing and slightly deceiving.

OP - what is the backlight like?

I bought one of these, also from Argos, for £35.

[img] [/img]

With it being an ILLUMINATOR, I was expecting a decent electroluminescence type backlight. When I press the light button, there is a piss-poor orange light in the tiny LCD panel only.

Disappointed.

The air will press on your face with considerably more than the prevailing atmospheric pressure due to your movement.

When the velocity head increases the pressure head reduces. The velocities are going to be involved with divers won't be sufficient to change the static head much. I'll stick with my "it's all marketing guff" theory as it seems much more plausible. 😉

@derekstarship

I have that watch - I too was dissapointed in the light, the rest of the watch is good though.

I still want to find a reasonable cost watch that looks half decent (analogue hands/face) yet has simple functionality of a Timex Ironman....

If I shout ILLUMINATOR whilst pressing the buttons on my watch I transform into a light-themed Superhero.

Not much call for it in Simister though 🙁

Probably dry seals, most water-resistant watches have O-rings to seal parts like screw-on backs, winders, push-buttons, etc, and these should have a tin film of silicon grease applied when the case is closed up.
When I opened up my Seiko SPORK to regulate it, I greased the O-ring carefully before putting the case-back back on; helps stop the O-ring from binding and pinching out when the back is tightened up.

@countzero..useful info thanks ..in the meantime following on from the info received earlier
I have looked on the Animal website and they do indeed have their own service department but I haven't as yet contacted them with regard to a price to re-seal & service ..
The watch itself still works perfectly ..
Cheers

Bugger me those watches are fugly.

My ideal is a minimal watch with no second hand and a crystal clear, simple display face.

I'm sooooo near buying a Daniel Wellington but it's just the way they've reversed the D on the facia.

It would irritate the hell out of me every time I looked at the thing...

Has anyone heard of Skagen watches, they look and seem mighty classy lightweight and slimline.
I’ll take a pic if I get a chance of my latest one which is a Skagen.
I have a titanium one with carbon face. 😉

Mine is waterproof to 3000m and is milled from a solid block of titanium. This is essential for my usage, which includes washing up, having a shower and the occasional swim.
