Even though I won't be leaving the airport? I have heard that connecting flights in the US are a bit like this. Am I right?

Yes.

"If you are a citizen of a VWP country and arriving by air or sea either as your final destination or "In Transit" do I need to apply for ESTA ?

Yes. You must apply for ESTA even if you are only transiting the U.S. In the address field of the application, write "In Transit."

My understanding is that you need to have your tickets on you for all future flights so you can prove you don't intend to stay and have paid for the future flights.

For the money and to save any hassle if you have a delayed flight then I would get one anyway.

you will be going through US immigration + customs before getting back on the plane, so yes.

good luck, hope you have left a decent amount of time for your transfer...

Can I use my ESTA card? (Apologies for the Londoncentric reference humour)
