Ok so the Russian news got me thinking about the Sam Fender song.

I really wanted not to like it, I know it's written as a total homage to born to run/thunder road but I guess why I've ended up liking it so much. I really thought it was a Brandon Flowers/Killers song when I first heard it because of it's Springsteen-esque style (which is why I liked Sams town so much).

Anywho, a bit of a ramble but I was suprised I've not seen it discussed on here. Muisc affectionados flame me!

I tried and failed to find an explanation in my lunchbreak, how would a nuclear rocket work?

I presume the submarine/torpedo version is a relatively conventional electric drive.

The USA made a nuclear ram jet many years ago. Used the nuclear reactor to heat air which then expands and "drives" the engine. Apparently they abandoned it so things didn't escalate leading to a Russian version as they were deemed as unstoppable and when it does impact it's target it also doubles up as a "dirty bomb". Could also have been as they couldnt get it to work.

I am not sure if the current russian cruise missile is like this but I assume it is.

They could potentially sit at high altitude and circle outside the perimeter of the enemy countries airspace until needed or the fuel runs out - would make the Cold War days of fearing a ground or ship launched missile or planes launched attack seem like playschool.

Not looked into the torpedo, my first thought would be electric drive as you say or I guess you could boil water and have a steam jet driven one to go really fast!

The American nuclear ramjet was a tad polluting. Basically the one they made work had the reactor directly cooled by the air coming into the engine. This was then not only heated considerably, but also irradiated. I suspect actual particles came off the reactor moderator material and left a plume of not very nice dust behind it. In a separate project they tried to build an indirect unit, which would have been less bad, but couldn’t get it scaled down enough for flight.

Thunderbird 2 was meant to have indirect nuclear propulsion.

Shielding was also an irritation. Dispensing with pilots is a logical step.

I was expecting another Sick Bikes thread.

Off topic but I saw one in the flesh on Sunday at Sherwood pines. Almost fell off my h̶o̶r̶s̶e̶ bike. How many made it to customers?

How many made it to customers?

It could have been one of the Peruvian frames that got sold off so it's possible that none actually made it to customers via Sick Bikes. Are there any confirmed cases of that happening, or just dodgy internet testimonials from sockpuppets.

Haha I love how massively off the OP this has gone, equally happy with the military tech geekery so fire on...

They did nuclear rocket and "jet" engines, i think they were scrap as a crash would be messy.

Back on topic. In spite of my best intentions I can't help but like the song a lot. Not quite a full guilty pleasure but getting there...

Found the Wikipedia "nuclear thermal rocket" basically a reactor cooled with hydrogen that then gets hot enough to dissociate and provide more thrust than simply burning it.

The torpedoes sound just as scary, able to travel undetected or sit on the seabed for months/years until the engine launches it at 200mph into a port! 3 seconds warning to make the entire east coast of the us uninhabitable.

Great artist! Did a session on Nihal's slot on 5Live a while back which was what caught my attention. Been trying to get my kids into him ever since but they keep defaulting back to Drake... FFS!

Wrightyson..I was working when he played the Mouth Of The Tyne festival in July ..most of his shows around the country are sold out ..Fifa 19 gave him a massive break when they used " Play God " ... his lyrics are fantastic for a lad in his early twenties ..

Yeah he's very good live, awesome voice and plenty of charisma and interaction with the crowd, knew when I saw him he'd definitely get bigger. As is normal for us these days our tickets have cost double as both kids are coming along. Great that they want to spend time with us but I'm almost certain me and mrsws at mud 40s will be the oldest folk in there. Not giving up any time soon though....

Just me or is it totally Psychedelic Furs / Pretty in Pink? Same voice, build and sax. I like both so I’m happy.

Yes the song is a guilty pleasure for me, though I do think in music there should be no such thing as a guilty pleasure. But clearly there is.

@Hodgydn. no. Not Jane's Adiction's finest song by a long way but I don't like any Sam Fender songs at all. or the Killers (Seen 'em play twice too). I don't think he sounds anything like richard Butler either.

it's good we don't all have the same taste though.

Why would you feel guilt for what you enjoy listening to?
