How does everyone deal with this? We normally just put music on and try and keep him calm. Anyone think there's truth in the idea that patting them gives them more reason to be afraid as it reaffirms something bad is happening?
I just hate it when the poor mite is lying there shaking uncontrollably. He's not a small dog either haha!
Heard of folk giving them sedatives.?
Aye. Not prepared to do that. Might try hypnosis.
Get them used to noises by putting the dog beds net to the home cinema speakers while watching something loud.
Repeatedly.

Normally a symptom of poor socialisation in the very early week/months of their lives.
By attending to him, patting, fussing etc you're not only affirming that its right to act frightened but you're also rewarding him for this. Think about, if the dog does good you give him a fuss etc. there's no difference to the dog.
Indeed, if you (re)act any way other than ignoring the noises etc. you're making an issue out of it the mind of the dog.
Roll back the clock and try a bit of re-socialising. This will take time & effort but its definitely worth it. Take the pooch everywhere and expose him to everything. If he reacts just ignore it. If he just gets on and carries on being a dog, reward him then with a big fuss and a play. Again, ignore all unwanted behaviour and reward the good stuff.
Play them Rammstein at 11 all day? Or, better yet take them to a gig. My eyebrows are just growing back after the last one.
They will not be scared of noises or fireworks after.
Will definitely try that next time! taAgain, ignore all unwanted behaviour and reward the good stuff.
