Just been to B&Q for a few bits and picked up a cheap Inspection Lamp, so cheap theres no bulb included, no problem, I'm in B&Q anyway and it just needs a 60w bc, how difficult can it be ? Jeez !!!!! what happened to the light bulbs, can I not get an ordinary light bulb that actually looks like a bulb, and actually says 60w on the packet ?? Lets hope theres one in my box at home otherwise I'm going to have to go back 😳

Its illegal now to bring new stocks of incandescent bulbs into the EU. You can still get old stocks and retailers can continue to sell old stocks, but the large chains dont have any anymore.

Coopers still have some though

There was a good story of a German selling them as "heat bulbs" though 🙂

Its actually illegal, under EEC laws to sell an inspection lamp without a bulb, just incase the [s]Idiot[/s]/customer puts his fingers through the cage and gets electrocuted.

But if you do , you had better tell the other half where the recipt is so she can get a refund after your funeral.

I had this problem in Tesco, I needed a "normal" bulb for my lad's room coz he has a dimmer switch, and the energy savers don't work with dimmers!

You need a low power dimmer switch to go with an energy saving dimmerable bulb.

MK make one but they're not easy to get but both exist.

Stoner, you seem almost perversely pleased by the banning of incandescents. 😆

Try Megaman "Dimmerable" low energy bulbs, they work on almost all dimmers. Only drawback is you need to power them up on full for a few seconds before ramping down, otherwise they flicker a bit.

they are terribly inefficient 🙂

The lighting industry is a joke though. Poor quality over priced fittings, various incompatibility issues with form factors let alone all the different fitting variants. Most electricians are woefully ill-informed about lighting technology too.

megaman are quite picky on which dimmers they approve.

On the subject of energy efficient light bulbs, does anybody make any non fugly candle bulbs? I've got 9 here and don't really want the horrible ones I've seen so far

the megaman ones are OK, but double check form factor. the Ballast/controllers in CFL energy efficient bulbs can end up making the bulb shape larger than some traditional candles and wont fit in the lamp holder.

There are loads of halogen replacement lamps in the same glass envelope of original GLS lamps and candle lamps

60w is now replaced by 42w and gives a nice crisp light
