Alright people,
Took the roof box off for first time in a long time, drove 5 hrs to Cardigan and back and the whole way there, at any speed >60mph the most mind-bendingly annoying high pitch moan emitted from what sounded like the front roof bar.
Is this normal?
Any way to shut it the @&()£ up? 🙂
Thanks car persons.
Sell the car and buy a van. Not the most economical option but it's an option. 😯
I you aren't using them then take them off. Not only will it stop the noise but it will save you a suprising amount in fuel too!
has an end cap come of the bars?
Mine did this and whistled all the time.
or take them of or drive slower 😉
We had this on an old Escort van we had, in the end we zip tied some pipe insulation across the bar and this put a stop to it.
You can buy roof bar fairings which will solve the problem.
Let your wife ride inside the car?
My aerobars whistle when they're wet. Overspray from the windscreen wash is enough to set them off. No, I don't know either.
We had some Thule's that used to howl - they had a slot underneath to allow variance in car model width. I taped these up and it stopped.
Are they like the ones in that picture? If so, putting the rubber strip in makes a huge difference.
they had a slot underneath
Ooh - cunning, I'll check that tomorrow. Ta.
Pipe insulation!
I had this with the Thule aeros. Run some tape along the underside of the bars to cover the channel that is visible. It makes them much quieter.
I've always just ignored this, but thanks for giving me some ideas on what to do.
Every day is a school day on here!
I have some aero types, forget the make but not Thule. They have a slot in the top into which you slide the Thule bike carrier, filled with a bit of soft rubber which made it a little hard to slide the carriers in. So I removed it, and listened to a horrible whistle for a day. Following day I put it back, put up with the fiddly fittings and it was fine.
Cover the slots on the bottom. Either with the plastic strips that you get with it or if you have lost them just use tape like me.
