Yesterday I seemed to spend a lot of time writing out contributions to threads and then deleting them. Sometimes I deleted them because they didn't really add anything of worth but more often because they were just too negative.

The negativity tended to be in the "do you like ........ ?" or "what do you think of.....?" type of threads where despite thinking that the item in question is clearly an abomination I didn't really want to pee on anybodies fireworks.

Over a typical week I must delete about 20% of what I write. Does anybody else does this or do you all treat it as a written up stream of consciousness?

Quite a bit tbh. Usually cos I'm very impulsive so need to check myself a fair bit, and sometimes cos on reflection something just isn't appropriate/fair/nice/necessary. Sometimes an initial reaction needs to be tempered with a bit of rational sense.

But generally I think in the right way so don't need to worry to much about upsetting folk as I'm just not at all offensive, really.

I carefully consider what I'm going to post, rarely do I delete what I've started to write

It's a case of engaging the brain before the fingers in my case

Elfinsafety, I'm surprised by that response. I had you down as a stream of consciousness person.

Oh sometimes it is, particularly if I'm having a manic episode. In fact sometimes I'll read something back later, and think 'blimey'.

Some good stuff comes out then though. Well I think so anyway. Others might just think it gibberish but there you go.

I self-moderate my language a lot on here, although it's something I struggle with. I guess I sometimes forget who the other punters are, eg, if I was having tea with the vicar I would have visual reminders to that effect. I also have to remind myself that some people are surprisingly sensitive, so I will often tailor posts with that in mind. I never moderate my opinions though, although when I read stuff back, my posts often appear to be far more liberal than I thought I was. Luckily I type very very slowly, so I can moderate as I go along and rarely alter stuff just before posting.

I do this with depressing frequency. Usually on threads which provoke a strong response within me. Then I remeber the utter futility of trying to educate people* on the interwebs and delete the whole lot.

*Bring a twit round to my (obviously right) way of thinking.

I imagine that there's a phalanx of the PC Brigade patrolling the forum. After all, they're everywhere aren't they? So I moderate my posts accordingly. The swear filter is getting on my tits though. I can't even write that word that rhymes with deck and begins with "f". Jeez.

My missus, bless her, once commented that my naturally argumentative nature made me sound like a complete dick on the forums and that wasn't the lovely man she knows.

Since then I try to imagine reading my post aloud to her and then moderate it accordingly.

If I had a girlfriend I imagine she might say that.

I reckon we all just need to get laid more.

Out of interest, how many self moderators are in relationships? We've been together for nearly 7 years and moderation is definitely necessary between people. Politeness is the lubricant between the grinding cogs of different opinion.

I'm quite relieved to hear others have comments that have never been read or voiced. I agree with a lot of the above! I'm sure there are many here who could benefit from a little self-mod 😀

Nicely put. Noted for future use, if you don't mind of course!

Sometimes I do as the OP said and get half way though a post and delete it coz I CBA usually. Other times if it's a bit controversial I think **** it and hit the post button.

I plan every post with obsessive precision. I think the longest I've ever spent typing out a post was approximately 1 hr 17 mins.

Funnily, that's what I've been using. I can't believe that the word minus the l has been banned - it was in Father Ted FFS 🙂

TSY, when are you leaving for South Wales? What time do you expect to be doing the Twrch (after the uplift)?

Erm.. I've rarely corrected or deleted anything. I'm by nature a self moderator and considerate kinda guy, or so I think. Therefore pre posting I tend to have some sort or theme or point to make, which goes somewhat to temper any major fauxpas or retaliation posts.

I also take into consideration that I don't know any of you, you're all just virtual typojockeys.

I do find it hard to restrain my enthusiasm though. Some topics make me want to keep posting (the architectural/arty/new bike/great rides/i'm doing my first epic event etc.) So I'll pull back, not wanting to take over the post with my rambling(s)

I do it all the time, otherwise the stream of consciousness that falls out of my BRANE scares even me.

I type very very slowly, so I can moderate as I go along

I do that when I think people I'm talking to can't read very fast.

Emsz - your task for the day, if you happen to be on pinksofa, is to see if you can suss out which one of my girly mates profiles was actually written by me 😀

I do try to self mod.

Sometimes I spend five minutes doing it.

Unfortunately, when I reread what I've edited so thoroughly and sent as a judged, intelligent opinion, I realise it's still utter tonk.

This post, for example, started out as a query about how to secure a fox to a ferris wheel.

The fox went first, said ferris wheel followed soon after.

Believe me, this post is way more intelligent, more considered, more strokey-strokey than my first one. What a rant that was!

I more often that not will write a reply to a thread and then think "what's the point?" and delete it.

I also correct spelling mistakes and such like, as I know that certain people can't resist picking up on spelling/gramatekal errors.

All the time, I often write out post, then just hit "back" on the grounds that no one cares. Probably would for this one as well, but since its a special occasion...

Confused as to whether you think it was an intentional mistake or not, and whether it is in fact a mistake or not? 🙂
It wasn't meant to be a hidden 'aren't I funny?' error. Just an abbreviation of 'what is', as in "what is (what's) the point?".
IMO "Whats the point?" would be incorrect.....

Hmmmm, shall I delete this post of hit send post.....hmmmmmm

Sorry. Of course it's not a mistake. Just thought that I'd balance the negativity of the grammar police with a bit of idiotic positivity. Bit silly, really. My bad. Apologies.

It's what happens (at least to me) the more I read these forums - I see a comment, I hurry to write something (not sure why, but it's better than working I guess), I click Send Post and then wonder: what the hell I was thinking?

< post-modern angst ensues >

@ camo16 - thanks for your idiotic positivity! It was much appreciated.

PS - did you like the use of my semi-colon there??!!

Rarely, only occasionally when I know it'll start an argument that I don't have time to fully explore.

stumpy01: a semi-colon is ALWAYS an inspired grammatical choice: it's sophisticated; stylish; and better than an em dash any day of the week!

Now, when can you use these: { } ?

my waking state can swing rapidly between somnambulistic and psychotic.. and I can also be emotional and impulsive.. so the majority of anything that I think or feel is ill-considered knee jerk nonsense or at best not even slightly interesting..

About 60% of my potential input to the forum ends up on the cutting room floor..

and I deliberate far too laboriously over the posts that make the grade.. TSYs 90 minute post construction would be considered impetuous and whimsical in comparison..

+1 for anything involving politics or religion, and doubly so if the thread has attracted the attention of TJ, Elfinsafety or Woppit. I have occasionally lapsed, but I try and remind myself that, as a lefty youth worker (who also happens to be a Christian), I have more effective platforms for spreading my malign influence in the world 😆

Harrrdy harrrr har..

I should have put in a limitless number of ...........'s and a repeat to fade just to get you all "nel modo" Just as the coach teeters on the edge of that ravine..
But that would mean I've over posted, lack of moderation, internal dichotomy, frontal labotomy, moderation typo sodomy.

Me too... I usually make a point of not posting on threads* where certain other users have posted. I don't want to get dragged into their nasty little world of attention-seeking vitriol.

*This is an exception - but I'm also recognising the special occasion.
