How long would you tolerate a cold type infection which develops into a cough before visiting the doctor? I am on about 12 days now without improvement and its doing my head in. I know you shouldn't clog up the NHS visiting a doctor for a viral infection as there is nothing to be done. But dont know how long I should leave this cough for without being checked out in case its in need of antibiotics. I've only visited my GP about 3 times in the past decade, and I'd hate to be seen as clogging up an overstretched system, if I am over reacting, but how do you know if its progressed into something that needs a bit of a helping hand
I have something that sounds very similar, been about 2 weeks now. The cough has started to become a little more, shall we say... productive, so I think it's beginning to clear finally.
If you think it's on your chest then get it checked out, I don't think mine is (yet!).
My GP says a cold that lasts more than 3 weeks needs looking at, after 3 weeks, 9 out of 10 still get left to get better on their own but he would rather see you.
I'm just coming to the end of one that I've had since mid-December.
The doctor said there were some horrors around this winter that have been lasting 6-8 weeks.
Google 'post viral cough' for more info.
I had a cold just after Christmas, I still have a slightly sore throat and a tickly cough that will not shift, it's been 5 weeks. I wouldn't mind but I've been getting 8hrs sleep a night, taking vitamins, eathing healthy food, off the booze and looking after myself.
My mum has had one for ages, turned out to be indigestion. It was getting into her lungs and making her cough.
Might not be a cold
