Duh, a short long run is a run after drinking a short

I've been following this thread... This time a month ago, I was running 10k once a week and about 4k three times a week.

Now I'm clocking up 8k four times a week ๐Ÿ™‚

Brill!

I've stopped for a few months. Was running with my mrs several times a week as well and I was doing baby steps so I didn't shoot off and have given myself house maids knee! Taken a fair while to sort it out but will start up again soon. Got Great South Run in a few months so should probably get back out there pronto

Ooh, did 8.5km in 45 minutes today! I have one month left - pretty sure I can get to that 50 minute 10k by then (even if today's run is the furthest I have ever gone).

Turns out that all that work on intervals has really made some difference, and I wouldn't have known to try them without the various tips on here. Thanks all.

Started running again in January after a good few years layoff, entered the Janathon (google it) and got on alright, 155 miles over the month. Stuck with it steadily through the year and into the Juneathon (warmer brother of Janathon) and clocked 200 over that. And now I'm just on my way back from a beautiful but brutal 23 hrs on the Grand Raid des Pyrenees ultramarathon! (50 miles, 5000m total ascent)

Biggest changer for me was getting a decent gait analysis when I bought shoes - the Salomon XAs I'd run in in the past were ripping my feet apart, blistered really badly in my arch. Accelerate in Sheffield were really thorough with me and helped me sort out what was going wrong where (hypermobile gait, pronation beyond the limit of the motion control in the Salomons) and have sorted me out with a couple of pairs of shoes, Saucony trail shoes to start with, then Mizuno Wave Harriers to deal with the Ultra better.

Biggest tips I'd offer are to get a decent analysis, try and clock mileage off-road (easier on the knees , less boring, and helps build stability and propriaception into the legs), and just enjoy it!

Oh, and one other tip: Some people don't get on with training plans, stopwatches, interval sessions etc. I'm one of those people. Sometimes it's good just to run what you feel...

started running for the first time in 20 years 6 months ago and was getting along great, did a couple of 10k and improving dramatically, then I dislocated my knee cap by slipping on a rug so running daps have been hung up for a good few months, hoping to get back to it as soon as the knee will stand up to it - addictive

So I was thinking abotu this thread again yesterday. Having not run in a year, maybe once every 2 weeks about 5k I did a sprint triathlon yesterday and managed my run in 27 mins so I was VERY pleased with that. How do I get my 5k time better? I know it's about doing intervals, but WHAT intervals? How often? How long for etc? CAn anyone help me with that?

I did my first race on New years day.

The Box Hill Knacker cracker (10k over 475m of climbing)
Claimed to be
"Almost certainly the toughest 10k in Britain!"

Pretty pleased with 25th - although could hardly walk for a week afterwards. aiming for top 20 next time.

M-C: Have a look for Audiofuel online, they do a bunch of mp3 training tracks that run you through different speed/interval/training sessions.
