[Closed] How do I find out what my job role should be paid?

We're going in for 'salary banding' consultations next week which I'm sure will be as dreadful as it sounds. I'd like to go in armed with what a person in my role is typically paid. The issue is my role is kinda 'custom' in that it's not a regular job you find advertised. Amongst other things I edit our intranet site, write news articles/briefings, liaise with designers for branding, test software for our intranet site, etc. I'm the only person in the company that does my job.
Been with the company 12 years and based in central Scotland. I'm happy with what I get paid but won't be very happy if I get 'red ringed'. I'm very good at what I do and my boss has said on many occasions that she couldn't cope without me.

Any idea what I should get paid or how I can find out?

Its a bit silly isn't it, HR bods talk about "job matching" and "job families" then you end up with 500 staff and 498 "job profiles".

Good luck !

I would approach it from another angle, decide what you think you are worth and find jobs in that area that have certain key words, and try and make what you do sound more strategic btw and run screaming if they try to put you in a generic admin band.

Yeh it is all a bit silly - appraisals, job descriptions, salary banding, etc. Can I just get on with my job please?

List out your skills, qualifications, and experience, then go through job sites looking for comparables. Add/subtract a little depending on location and with enough examples you should have a pretty good idea of an average.

Present it to the HR bod and they'll most likely have a hard time arguing against it. If they want to cut your salary (or just not give you a raise) then they'll feel obliged to counter your info with some justification of their own.

I haven't dealt with agencies for some time now, but given their past propensity for over-egging salaries to attract applicants you could end up with a pay rise!

If you looked across other industries, it's probably the best paid part of what you do, so you might want to major on it.

(Making some assumptions as I don't know in detail what you do, however at my place the IT bands are a good chunk higher than the equivalent level in other areas)

Depends, did you used to work as a milkman and paid for one of those correspondence courses? If so you must be worth at least £35k now...

As for salary banding, coincidentally my place is going through the same exercise at the moment although they've paid some agency (probably a fortune) to work it all out. They also seem to be proud it will all be based on national averages - then again, "proud to be average" just about sums up most of my experiences with HR types.

Not actually sure what the impact will be for us, they used to publish salary bands on our intranet until people started complaining they were below the minimum salary for their grade so rather than actually address this they just stopped publishing the bands.

We're an outsourcer as well though so we do 'acquire' people from time to time on grossly inflated salaries (until recently I was the third highest paid person in my team, despite being the team leader, most experienced and technically qualified...). So unless you think you're grossly over-paid I wouldn't really worry about getting managed out, especially if your boss appreciates you (not that that counts for much if the budget-cutting knives come out...).
