So something like if I took a screenshots of a satellite view combined them into one image, scribbled lines all over it – more elaborate than a gpx route, and then used a program like orux maps or something to display it and then use the phone gps to find my location on the made up map?

Scan map. Save as 'map.jpg'
Geo reference it. I use memory map 'navigator' for this. I believe that it is available as a free trial.
Install map viewer onto phone. Memory map for android should work, as will MMtracker which I use.
Copy scanned, georeferenced file into appropriate folder in android device.

It is the georeferencing that is the faff but can be done. I did it to a jigsaw once!

This might help. http://singletrackworld.com/forum/topic/memory-map-for-android-1
