Anyone else excited about today's launch?
Quite a big one for the US and Space Force.
And on that front: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9612516/

Space Force.

I always found 7-Zark-7 to be intensely annoying.

I can explain why if you care sufficiently?

Oh, I know why*

Curiously, I was a big fan of 1-Rover-1.

* Notwithstanding Gatchaman conversion issues it's the whole comic relief cute sidekick thing.
Orko, Snarf, Jar Jar Binks. They're all the same.

I think it's pretty likely to be scrubbed today tbh but I'll be watching it if not. I don't often remember to, but rocket launches are awesome

Space X

New stuff is interesting and is going over UK following the ISS. However I'm conflicted with Space X stuff as I can't stand Musk.

Oh yeah, he's a pure ****. But I think it's probably the case that he achieves the cool stuff that he does, because he's a pure ****.

Aside; at the moment absolutely all of the chat on the livestream is people getting confused how time zones work, it is beautiful. In the last page I've seen 7 different guesses as to when it'll actually launch.

If it launches, I’ll be watching. I had the good fortune of seeing a space x ISS supply rocket launch at Canaveral a couple of years back. Fantastic spectacle.

It's painfully American. I want to love watching it but they just pronounced aluminium incorrectly and that was the final straw. I'll try again closer to the launch...

Have been watching this live. Yes it looks boring, but what are they doing? Constantly tapping the screens?
Are they just 'seeing what this one does'? If I change this we'll go faster? If I switch this we can listen to Popmaster?
If it were me I'd just sit there and let those in Head Office fiddle with the controls!!!!

Watching it too. Quite excited but definitely not a spectator sport.

Don't they fuel it with the astronauts in situ to avoid the risk of any reason to abort after fueling and avoid the problem and risk of explosion of risking de-fueling? get everything ready, fuel then go?

That's one of the big hurdles crossed, they're looking pretty optimistic.

Incidentally, if you've got the Countdown theme playing in your head, you've started too early.

Seems fairly certain to go ahead, loading propellant now..

9.30 for ISS overhead, 9.33 for launch and 9.50 for SpaceX going overhead!

Scotroutes, is that I joke I'm too stupid to understand? I definitely spelled it correctly!

Anyway, I'm back on it. Watching it is boring but listening is better!

I'm not expecting to see it as it'll still be too light.

Aluminum is the older spelling. Both are correct usage, and many American spellings like color, or words like fall are old English.

Gutted it didn’t happen. But it was still pleasant sipping beer by the firepit in the garden waiting. I’m taking it as a practice run for my set up for saturday

Trying to get the needle to move.

It's not like the old days with James Burke though is it?

Nope.

It's not Old English and if you go back far enough then it's totally woolly with several languages feeding in. Even as recently as Middle English the spellings of colour and color were interchangeable.

But "colour" has been well established in Modern English for centuries. "Color" is a result of Webster (of Mirriam and... fame) attempting to simplify the language in the US in 1800s. It stuck in America but it's another corruption.

It's true though that some things we think of as Americanisms, like -ize for instance, aren't the case but rather it's the other way around. But -or / -our ain't one.

No idea about the etymology of "fall."

Some americanisms I can get behind, like zs in place of ss as that's how it's pronounced in 'realize' and the like, but their inability to spell or pronounce aluminium correctly is properly rage-inducing for me. If they dropped that i from every other -ium in the periodic table then at least there would be some logic to it. But they haven't, so there isn't.
