This is what I have behind the double dimmer switch in the front room.

That looks like 6 wires across 4 cables not the classic 2 core & earth.

This is what I have behind the 2 way single switch on the landing

That looks like 5 wires across 2 cables again not the classic 2 core & earth.

Bedroom double dimmer (its a very 80s house) has what I'd expect which is 2 x 2 core & earth.

Is my house about to burn down?
Do I need a rewire?

It's not unusual.
No, you will probably not need a rewire. You may need some improvements, but you currently have PVC cable installed, which has a life of 75+ years, so you are good for another 40 years.
Thats a lighting circuit you've taken pictures of. There are loads of different ways of wiring them, you've found one of them. Nothing wrong with it, it has earth sleeving, so that's an improvement on many I see. The blacks could do with a bit of brown (or red) sleeving, but it isnt a problem without, as it will be obvious to any electrician that the black is not neutral.

When it's been wired they didn't have any 3 core and earth by the looks of it!
Nothing wrong per se, just a bit confusing and careful marking of cores is needed if removing a light switch.
Yeah a bit of brown sleeving wouldn't go amiss on those black wires!

Did somebody mention earth sleeve?

Socket

I've yet to find any in my house. @alanl. Was it accepted practise back in the day?

Yes should have green/yellow earth sleeve on it. If you go back to the sixties/early seventies it would have been green.

The guys that did your house must have lost their drum of sleeving 🤪

I don't think it's ever been accepted. Otoh I'm pretty sure it's been common practice since Faraday

@oldgit

Don't think so. Far too flimsy. Might have been a thing at some point?

BTW That is the 'good' wiring. You should see the bad!
