I'm upgrading to BT Fibre, but having found their standard modem/wifi router to be pretty poor I'm wondering if any of the helpful IT bods on here could please recommend a good modem/wifi router to use with fibre.
At present I run Usenet Server VPN at a device level, but I'm wondering if any of the modems have VPN functionality built in and if that is something to look at? I know a VPN is a good thing, but that's where my knowledge starts to run out.
I'm not massively price sensitive on this - happy to pay good money for the right kit. If it helps, it's a modern flat, and its not that big.
Sorry - appreciate it is a very dull question for a Sunday afternoon.
If you don't know why it's a good thing, how do you know you need one?
I like to ensure that I can prevent my ISP packet sniffing my traffic to see what I'm looking at - no-one needs to know how much time I spend lurking on STW. Private and encrypted traffic is a good thing in my book.
I also like to be able to convince Netflix and others that I am in countries other than the one I am in.
I like to be able to keep a consistent connection open when ISPs try to shape traffic.
So, that's why I think VPN's are a good thing.
Ah. You're one of them. Sorry I asked.
@ Jam bo - one of whom? Is confused?
Ah, I see. Not really.
A wee bump to see if anyone does have a recommendation, please.
Bacofoil works best, yeah you can save a few quid going own brand, but 'they' can get through Tesco Value foil.
I'm using a TP-Link TL1043ND with DD-WRT. It's solid as a rock, Wifi range is good and it has all the bells and whistles you could wish for in terms of tweaking etc. It (DD-WRT) has built in VPN capability
Using it with PlusNet fibre.
I'm running an Asus Dark Knight (RT-N66U) with the Merlin Firmware and it's been excellent. I have a Gb hard wired network and a lot of wireless devices, work from home all day and hammer the connection and never had a problem.
