Off on my hols in a month and need a book for around the pool.

Looking for a Sci fi, sci fantasy probably but open to any suggestion except shade of grey. Read all the terry pratchetts, liked Neil gaimans American gods and never where, Tom holts barking and may contain traces of magic, which were fun.

This isn’t the sum total of my reading lol but hopefully gives you some help in suggesting a good read

Obviously done all the Tolkien

Cheers in advance

Not fantasy, but the Slough House series by Mick Ferron is great if you fancy a bit of spy fiction.

Iain M Banks Sci fi stuff is great. Consider Phlebas was the first. Only one I didn’t get was Feersum Enjin.

Some good shouts, the rivers of London looks like the one, but I will certainly keep the others on the list.

Isn’t dune a heavy read?

Dune is hard going.

Rivers of London is a good shout; I think the next one is out soon.

I found Dune hard going compared to Terry Pratchett, Tom Holt and Neil gaiman. As others have mentioned, The Rivers of London series is pretty good, and the Brentford Trilogy is also worth a look.

Have you read any Jasper Fforde?

Usually gets recommended on here, but the Old Man's War series by John Scalzi is worth a look. I wasn't too sold at first but really got into it. I wasn't a huge fan of Rivers of London, though I've only read the first one.

I wouldn't say Dune was particularly hard going, but on the other hand I've been known to read Cormac McCarthy on holiday so I may not be the best judge.

Have you read Harry Potter? I quite like younger books for easy reading, so that, Mortal Engines series, Hunger Games series, His Dark Materials series are all worth a look. Also they're all brilliant. Especially Mortal Engines. Starts well, gets surprisingly and brutally bleak as it goes on.

The Book of Dave by Will Self was a surprisingly good read I picked up from the local train station 'library' (a small bookshelf in the ticket office at the local Southern rail station I frequent).

Joe Abercrombie is normally my go-to fantasy recommendation, First law trilogy is superb. Though for last year on holiday I started Robin Hobbs Assassin trilogy and have since read the rest of the RotE series bar one, including another trilogy on this year's holiday.

His new one is out in 3 weeks - A Little Hatred, just in time for the OP's holiday.

I expect it to slay - Joe A very reliable in that department.
