We will be in touch
Hi STW,
I've finally decided after 10 years of suffering to have a hip resurfacing op. If anybody has had any experience of this I would appreciate any comments, especially on how long it too to get back on a bike, especially MTB.
Cheers

No experience but its on my agenda in a few years time. I posted some questions a while so try doing a search for threads i started.
Just out of interest, what are your symptoms that you are suffering from to need the surgery ?
I have had a painful hip joint on and off for about six months (maybe more) that hurts in normal walking conditions, if I angle my foot out slightly it seems to ease, but I find myself limping a lot if I spend a while on my feet.
Seen a few and they are back on their feet the same day. Biking probably looking at a minimum of a couple of months.
Have seen a few. Folk were up and walking the same day.
My pain depends on how much I ride and what bike I take out. I've basically retired the h/t because I'm in a lot of pain afterwards even on a relatively sedate ride I'm in pain for hours after.
I struggle to put o a pair of shoes and socks and it's this that has made me think I'm young enough to recover fully and still ride.
Oh, I'm 44 this year and I didn't watch the video btw Zulus.

Skin, same issue here, thinking about re-surfacing, I have had a steroid injection into hip late last year and that has helped, but I know that I'm going to have to make that decision on surgery soon.
I'm 52 and I struggle to walk now without Tramadol and I'll keep taking it because the downside is walking with sticks.
The consultant told me that cycling had helped me because if I wasn't riding and keeping fit and active I would have been on sticks a couple of years ago.
I am getting worse and I'm having a lot of trouble/pain with my knee now, I blame all those years riding a SS! 😉

Skin i have had two hip arthroscopies and whilst.they havent worked that well for me it might be something to ask about? Of course it will depend on what your problems are but might be worth looking into.
Hi mtbmaff, I'm constantly taking ibuprofen and I would not sleep after riding if I didn't. It's painful to put a pair of socks on so I think it's time to bite the bullet.
Thanks for the warnings angallis. I'm too far gone for the arthroscopies unfortunately and hopefully technology has changed a lot since the 90's.
Surgery on the 28th Feb.

I have been diagnosed as requiring replacement in the right hip with the left one nearing surgery as well. I'm just 50 and used to do a lot of running. By stopping most physical activity other than biking I'm getting by. The consultant basically told me to go on as long as I could and then contact him when I was ready for the op!
Re-surfacing wasn't an option offerd to me. Do we have any surgeons/doctors on here who can advise on what they think is the best solution
had both my hips done 2years ago, find riding my hardtail no problem but walking a long distance a bit difficult,at 62y i though i was finished, now pain free and pain killer free my body as returned to normal, but with an incresed libido,(sorry bit to much info).and my long time back problem seem to have gone the OP is a life changer.really got to thank the NHS,
D28boy, my consultant told me a year ago that I would know when I was ready for the op and he was right. My condition and age along with the fact that I want to carry on mtb'ing mean that I'm a good candidate for a resurfacing op.
Southeds, that sounds great and I'm looking forward to experiencing the kind of results you've had.

It is now 5 weeks since I had my operation and I am riding on Saturday. I cannot believe the transformation. I didn't realise how much pain I was constantly in.
I have been exercising on a static exercise bike in the gym since the first week and have recently progressed to a spin bike. My leg seems much stronger than before the operation but I suppose time will tell.
I saw my surgeon yesterday and he is happy for me to be out riding again. I cannot wait to get out and ride.

Result 🙂
Nice one.
Skin just had my third hip surgery and havent ridden my bike for maybe five years. Hope you do well. How old are you if you dont mind me asking?
Hi AA, I'm 43 and this is my first one. Fingers crossed it will be my last but I'm assuming I'm going to have the other one done at some point.
Why have you had to have three?

Triped?
I've had three arthroscopies resurfacing isnt something they are keen on when you 38.
Skin that is super news and I take heart from your quick return to cycling, very happy for you but take care out there buddy.
I hope to go under the knife soon, no date yet but it's a hip replacement for me , can't wait really, I've gone downhill (no pun intended) since Xmas, walking is just limping and I can't cycle very far but a plus point is ikea bed and mattress have helped me get a good nights sleep without pain.
Enjoy the ride,
Regards Matt.
