[Closed] heating Q -new boiler install - costs and good practices?

Need a new oil boiler as the old one is leaking and unrepairable. Have got 2 quotes so far, one from a worcester-bosch accredited guy who we have used for servicing in the past and another from a local bloke who's not on worcesters installer list.

(am waiting on a 3rd quote but he seems a bit unreliable, missed the first day he said would come, came the second day at 4pm when he said just after 9am!)

Anyway, boiler cost is £1300 ish. Its a condensing one and replaces an old non condensing so will maybe need some new flue work + extra parts

1st quote from company we have used before is £3600. Wife says he had a good look all round the house at heating system. Says this quote includes a chemical powerflush (which we probably need as some rads don't heat up evenly, and water leaking from boiler is very dirty), also fitting a new electrical circuit to boiler as current one isn't compatible with building regs and installing a magnaclean.

2nd quote guy apparently hardly looked at old system just noted boiler model. His quote is £2600 for same boiler as above. No mention of power flush etc, didn't look at electrics, was only here a few mins wife didn't trust him!.

At first i thought quote 1 was taking the p**s but now not sure if 2nd bloke might just be doing a quick as possible install and not cleaning the system properly which might lead to problems in future.

So just wondering what a reasonable quote is and whats good practice to do with a new boiler installation. I know worscester accredited bloke will be pricier but that does give us 7 year warranty instead of 5 years.

Would a power flush / magna clean and new electrics account for the difference in prices?, and is a flush and magna clean a good thing? No idea how much work is involved in swapping a boiler over!

cheers

I'd go for the first on. You can't quote for a heating system without looking at the system to see if any other work is required to bring it up to standard.

Other bloke is just charging what most people would charge,

I'd go for the first one.

Powerflush is around £400
Magnaclean (fitted) will be around £150-200
Add in that extra wiring that the second guy will probably end up charging you extra for anyway and that's where the extra £1000 comes from.

Th warranty is the clincher. Imagine 5 years down the line and you need a PCB for the boiler, with Installer 1 it costs nothing, with installer 2 it costs around £200 plus labour.

You probably wont get a warranty with a sludged up system like you have for the boiler. 1st guy is doing it the proper way. Price seems fine for the work involved.

thanks, never had boiler replaced so no idea what rough costs are but if this seems reasonable will go with the first company who seem a lot more interested and helpful.

It's hard to know exactly what work is required here but a straight boiler swap (with an easy install of a condensate drain pipe if you don't have one) would be circa £500-£600 + VAT depending on where in the country you are. Messing around with flues and electrics is going to take it up to circa £1000 + VAT i.e. circa £1,200 inc VAT. This gives you close to your £2,600 for second quote

I'd agree with Northernmatt on the extras which will give you better performance and life in the long term.

It would be worth asking for a discount from your preferred supplier. Which specific boiler are you going for? I'm not much cop with oil boilers but they do tend to be a bit more expensive than the gas equivalents.

If you want to play around with different options on cost try new-boiler-cost.co.uk. It's more for addditional radiators and controllers and it does not cover oil boilers (only gas) but it gives you a guide to what extras such as magnaclean cost.
