I have a Iomega 1tb external hard drive ( http://www.iomega.com/support/manuals/hdd2010/dskhd/en/consolidated/main.html#prstgdsku) and in a rush earlier I plugged in a spare laptop battery power supply rather than the HD power supply (19v as oposed to 12v supply). It's now got a blinking white status light when i plug the correct power supply in and is not doing anything. Tried looking online to see if there was a reset or something but can't find any details. Have i just turned it into a paperweight?

Any advice or thoughts appreciated?

The hard disk inside might still be OK - get hold of an external drive caddy for a 3.5 inch drive and transfer the disk from the Iomega case.

I would try

1. Have the laptop up and running without the hard drive connected providing that works, then connect the hard drive unit without the external power supply. There maybe enough juice in the battery to power the hard drive unit as well as the laptop.

2. If you have a multimeter, with the red lead connected to the centre of the connector and the black lead on the outside on the power supply connector, see if the meter reads a voltage without this connected should read 19v on the dc range.

Hope this helps

ricardo666,

1. It's a 3.5" external drive, it will not run on the power from the USB alone.

2. That would be fine to check the power supply, but I think that the issue is that the drive got 19v when it is designed for 12V ( +/- a certain tolerance ).

Cheers guys, tried the running from usb alone but it didn't work. Output on supply cables shown as 19v and 12v

I take it any 3.5" HD case/caddy would suffice? Anything i should be looking for in particular in them? best places to source them? Hopefully get one by the weekend (away with work this week)and things will be good again

Teaches me to rush things looked out!

Had a similar problem - a toshiba ext drive psu failed.

Just bunged everything into a new enclosure and all was fine.

Make sure your new caddy is the same sort as the drive inside the old one, google PATA/SATA, take the old one apart and check connections.

Or if you've a desktop you could plug the harddrive into a spare bay in it.

ebay or ebuyer are both ok for caddies

If you have eSATA on your laptop, select an enclosure with eSATA. You will at least have USB2 on your laptop, all the enclosures listed have USB3 - this is backwards compatible and if you get a newer laptop in the future you'll be able to make use of the USB3 connector.

Top Tip - stick an elastic band around one of your power supply connectors to indicate which is which, and avoid putting more volts than you should into the hard drive enclosure.

Thanks guys, will have a look into a caddy. Think I also have an old laptop where the psu died, I may be able to pinch the hardrive from it (from reading think they are 2.5") and use it as extra storage as well. Hopefully it's just the psu that's gone and the caddy will do the trick. Fortunately I have a back up of it on another hard drive (powered by usb 😉 )
