t the laptop on today,took ages to boot up and then everything saved is gone,recycle bin is still there and has not been emptied,any advice?

take it to someone - it will probably be dead easy to retrieve it.

Depends entirely on what caused it to disappear and how much it's been used since, not to mention how full the disk was, how fragmented etc. Its odd for files to just disappear.
Oh and don't use the disk in the meantime.
