I’ve some new cleats for my road bike. The shoes were second hand and I just left the old cleats in their original position for the last two years. I started looking for a simple guide on there they should go and disappeared down a roadie shaped rabbit hole.
Thinking of ball of foot minus the dimension in the link above. I know my heels are a bit inward but with 6 degrees of float I’m assuming that is less critical.

If you were comfy with them already then just put them where the old ones were.

My "method" is to push the cleats as far back as they'll go on standard shoes and then rotate a little bit to allow for my (un)natural foot position - I still think having your natural position in the centre of the float is sensible, unless it makes you hit the chainstays all the ime

Same for me, although I set mine dead straight. If you're running cleats with float then you probably need to fuss too much.
